In Photoshop Cs2 it will not allow me to make a selection of a layer on my workspace. I can only select from the pallet. And when I select it from my pallette, it doesn't show me what I selected on the workspace. It use to highlight the layer on the workspace. It also won't allow me to resize from my workspace, I have to do it through my edit menu. It was fine and then it just started happening. My operating system in windows xp, if that means anything. I have run a repair of my software. Help! I have so much work to do, and this adds so much more time on to it.

Make a selection of a layer in CS2 by CTRL+clicking on the layers Thumbnail in the layers palettte.

Make sure that 'Show Transform Controls' is selected (bounding box in previous versions) when the Move Tool is selected and that 'View - Extras' is checked (CTRL+H enables and disables this option).

If none of these work you need to reset Photoshops preferences file by either pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift very quickly as soon as you start to load Photoshop; or navigate to

    C:\Documents and Settings\*username*\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\9.0\Adobe Photoshop CS2 Settings\

and delete the file Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp.

You need to have the option to view hidden files in Windows Checked (Folder Options) in order to see the application data folder... and afterwards of course you need to set up the scratch disk, any external plugins folders, colour management settings etc, etc

Thank you! :) :) It's all back to order almost...I use to be able to just click on it to select a layer without using the crtl button also. It also won't give me the option to set the selection edges. It's not highlighted when I bring that menu up. Any answers for that?

I assume when you say select a layer, youi're not talking about selecting the layer pixels, rather than just making the layer active.

In that case make sure the move tool is 'selected' and check the 'auto select layer' option. CTRL+Clicking on the thumbnail is different, adds a selection around the pixels in that layer.

Not quite sure what you mean, do you mean feathering?
