ok i went over my friends house to play his Xbox 360 (i don't have one) and i played portal. i loved it and i got the trial of portal: the first slice it on my computer via steam. i try to open it and when i do it will go through who made it and then it says that i need pixel shader 2.0 to continue.:( i looked at my console.txt thing and got the following thing:

    Unable to remove h:\steam\steamapps\origitina\portal\portal\gamestats.log!
    maxplayers set to 1
    Steam config directory: h:\steam\steamapps\origitina\portal\platform\config
ConVarRef cl_forwardspeed doesn't point to an existing ConVar

anyone know what it means so i can fix it? oh and to let you guys know i have an intel (R) 8245G/GL/GE/PE/GV graphics controler and a windows xp(y)

The first thing you can try is to manually change the Direct X level that the game is using.
Perhaps, try the -dxlevel 90 setting first and go lower from there.

    Setting Game Launch Options

Yes, pixel shaders do depend upon the video card.
The OP should be able to play Portal, as his 82945G has Pixel
Shader version 2.0. and Portal requires Pixel Shader version 1.1.
Perhaps, newer video card drivers will get it working.

Hi there, I recommend the same as Tom6049 that you update your graphics drivers from here: Intel Graphics Driver Updater

Also you should make sure your DirectX is up to date, the latest is the February 2010 redistributable which you can obtain from here: DirectX Download

I would also recommend that you have both Visual C++ 2005 SP1 and 2008 SP1 redist packages installed which you can obtain from here: Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redist and Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redist

I am assuming you are on a 32-bit Operating System as you have not stated what OS you are using or how much RAM your using.

    Hope this helps.

I tested Portal on my work PC...shhhhhhhh!....and it ran fine (using lower graphic settings). My Dell OptiPlex G520 uses the 82945G Express Chipset with Intel
    Driver version 6.14.10.4926.
