It's because it's a dumb question and not a question that's asked in the real world or could be answered either way. The password process would be "authentication" but to even have a password and be able to log into the system would be "authorization" and some systems call logging it the system authorization.
Authentication is a process in which the credentials provided are compared to those on file in a database of authorized users' information on a local operating system or within an authentication server.
