Okay so I have a Sony CDRW/DVD CRX830E on a Dell Inspiron 1150 notebook. The drive does not play any disk at all the drive does appear in my computer but when there is a disk in the drive and you click on the D:/ drive in my computer it displays nothing when you try to run it from run.. on the start menu it says please insert a disk into the d:/ drive. Device manager says its there and says its working properly. I have tried uninstalling it along with the secondary IDE drive and then restarting windows so that it will find it...it found the hardware but it is still not playing any disk. I am trying to do this so I can use my windows xp reinstallation cd for the operating system so I can re-do my whole computer. I really need some help on this.
    Thank You.

oh and i just found something else...when I try to do a system restore to an earlier point... i get this... "Changes made to drive(s) D D:/ after this point cannot be reversed because the drive was either excluded from System Restore monitoring, or was turned off or removed."

Don't worry about the restore message, unless your Windows is installed on D:. :)

Dell has issues with CD rom drives glitching after a Windows update (not just dell, i think its a certain manufacturer of drives). Anyway, the only way you can fix it if nothing else works is by editing the registry. I havent dont this in a while, so i cant tell you exactly where to go but hopefully someone else posts, or maybe google it.
