Hi, Urgent response required please! I play counter strike source, a lot. Since installing in my new property (With a better internet connection) regardless of which server i log on to I have a really high Ping. Ive tested my ISP and have contacted them. Its nothing to do with the router as i have bypassed that, neither is it anything to do with the modem. My connection speed is a solid 9.6mb and my ping is around the 20ms mark. Yet when i log on to css servers my ping goes up to anywhere from 75-170!

    Please help!

If you actual PC hardware hasn't changed (just changed location) then there shouldn't (but not 100% guaranteed) be a problem with your PC etc.

Are you using a different modem / router than you did previously?

Unfortunately some ISPs in the UK still restrict common gaming ports, especially at peak times (although this isn't as common as it used to be). So, with that in mind, just because you get a good, consistent download and upload speed doesn't necessarily mean you will have a good ping to a game. The other unfortunate factor is that if this is happening it is highly unlikely that your ISP would actually admit it! I have had issues with BT in the past where they have restricted my line, something I knew for a fact but they rigorously denied!

To be honest, based on what you have said, I would suspect either a game server end issue or some kind of possible traffic restriction by your ISP.

your speedtest result has (for me!) just answered your problem! your with what was telewest they were bought out years back and are now part of the poor virgin media or as all gamers call em virmin look at this site http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Broadband-down-your-phone-line/bd-p/national and join many others with the woes of online gaming via virmin media, I play eq2 and get ping rates over 1,500 quite often and always have heavy packet loss, it's a known problem with them and they aren't doing anything about it.

Didn't know Telewest had been bought out by Virgin Media, if I did I would of pointed at that myself. I used to have ADSL through Virgin Media and it was an absolute nightmare for gaming. I am currently with TalkTalk and althought their telephone customer services are absolutely diabolical, approaching them through their forum has been very productive for myself and many other users. They are happy to adjust profiles (and therefore SNR (signal to noise ratio) etc. on your line to get you the best possible out of your connection, and I haven't had any issues with gaming since I have been with them either (admitedly only 3 months now), I only switched because they provided an LLU service on my exchange.

what used to be virgin net bought out telewest blueyonder and ntl several years ago and then formed into what is now virgin media, since then they have become awfull! poor phone support poor speeds etc and as for online gaming they are a joke! that's why the op has such a poor connection with online gaming and high pings! the "official" although mainly ignored by virgin forums have dozens of pages about this problem on there.

Virginmedia has widely varying capabilities depending on area
What works perfectly well in one street can be absolutely useless in next street. It all depends on how many users are on that particular cable to the green box on the street corner & what they use the network for

The general consensus is that Virgin media is one of the worst UK ISPs for gaming

This is the only important bit and shows you have a problem that will affect games etc
The bits in Red won't have any effect on your gaming but might cause problems updatimg some programs from time to time
