Recently u/g'd from ME to XP home sp1, and started having problems almost right away. My CPU may have already been infected when I upgraded. Antivirus and spyware scans found many infections, and seems to have taken care of many of them, but one or maybe more look like they are still there, and I cant get rid of them. I performed all of the windows updates, and installed sp2 in an attempt to help out. After the fact, I read somewhere not to do this if your CPU is already infected, so I hope its not too late.

Anyway the normal thing seems to be to post your hijack this log, so here it is.

Many thanks in advance.
Nick

Here is part 2... S.A.S. log and new Hijackthis log.

Also, there were several suspect looking prog's in the startup which I disabled during earlier removal attempts. The lines are still there in the startup, just not selected. What should I do about them?

Empty the recycle bin
Boot

Run ActiveScan online virus scan

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix these with HiJackThis – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lnwin.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\lnwin.exe

DownLoad http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip or
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\lnwin.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\I
C:\WINDOWS\kwv2.dat
C:\GatorPatch.log
C:\UNDO\BACKUP.CAB

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new hijack log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

I think we've hit paydirt. So far everything looks good. A donation is certainly in order.

One last question. Now that I'm OK, what is the best way to keep this from recurring?

From what I have learned, it seems that a good firewall, antivirus program, and one or more anti-spyware programs should be used, preferably with some level of real-time monitoring in place.

I have Windows firewall on (although I have heard you should use something more), Avast antivirus, Spyware Doctor, CA antispyware, Windows Defender, Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and Prevx1.

If any of those are no good, or if you have any additional suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Thanks a whole heck of a lot for your patience and time.
