    Hi,

This problem has only started happening recently. Computer is getting really slow, and seems to slow down periodically to a crawl. The mouse pointer becomes jerky, and it feels like some process is using up all resources. I have closed down all running programs, and it still happens, usually when i have just closed a program down. I really don't want to re install windows, as this is a relatively fresh install anyway (about 3 weeks). I am running XP 64 with 1 gig ram, athlon 64 3700+. nvidia gefroce 8600 gts. How can I find out whats doing it. It surely can't be a hardware issue can it? I know this isn't the fastest setup, but its running slower than my old athlon 2500+ setup. Windows takes a long time to load too.
    Help please.

To download HJTsetup.exe from SpyKiller To Download HijackThis go to the following at the File Repository
Click on the link below to Download HijackThis Self Installer:

    http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
A security expert with a gold shield to the right of their name should take a look at your log - please be patient.

This log file seems a little bit scarce of processes, did you run this HijackThis in safe mode?

no, but i've just turned many of the processes off at startup to see if it helped. It didn't, but ive just uninstalled my secondary ide controller because it was on poi mode or something, when i reinstalled it, it switched to ultra dma mode 6. This seems to have speeded it up. Do you think this could have been the problem?

    Thanks for all your effort.

It might be but could you turn the processes back on and reboot the computer and re-run the HJT for a new log file so the gold shield has the whole thing to view?

Your computer will run faster in DMA mode instead of PIO mode, so that was a good move. (y)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As ozrom1e has already advised you, post a new log with all the processes running so we can see what's actually running before you close some of them.

I really appreciate all this support, guys.

I have restarted the processes I stopped through msconfig. The new logfile is below.

I would like to terminate all unimportant processes afterwards, so perhaps someone could advise me on that too.

    Thanks again.

This site will greatly assist you in trimming down the startup list of unnecessary running programs. Just type in a startup entry name in the box, then click the "Search" button. If it's listed in the database, it'll tell you what it is and whether it's safe to disable it from running in the background.
