    Hi, I would really appreciate a little help with what has turned into a major problem.

    I am running Windows 2000, with spybot, adaware, mcafee, zonealarm - and made the big mistake of installing Kazaa (don't ask me why).

    Then I made the even bigger mistake of running spybot and adaware after having used Kazaa, they found almost 100 files, folders and registry keys that would have been classed as scumware, and I removed them.

    The next time I tried to open Kazaa, of course it wouldn't work. So I tried to uninstall Kazaa - wouldn't uninstall because it was missing some file (coincidentally). So I tried to “un-quarantine” all the scumware files on my machine in order to be able to uninstall Kazaa before scanning again….

    The machine subsequently crashed and now will not boot up at all. Even in safe mode it will not work. I have run a windows repair but it hasn’t made any difference.

    Please advise. Thanks.

    KAZAA = BAD
    WinMX = GOOD!

    Unfortunately, Win2000 doesn't have the recovery tools needed to roll the system back like XP does.

    You will mostlikely need to reinstall Win2000 by performing an "In Place" installation.

    See This:
    How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows 2000

    Good Luck!

    and if that doesn't work, you're gonna be looking at formatting the drive & reinstalling.

    You absolutely did the right thing by running SpyBot and Ad-aWare.

    What you would have needed to do after that, was download and run Kazaabegone from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/, a neat utility by the maker of Startuplist and Hijack This.

    It would have removed all further Kazaa elements.

    Thanks for the advice. I had to reinstall windows on a separate partition, grab all my important email files, docs, etc and then totally format and reinstall after deleting absolutely everything (and running KazaaBeGone)!!!

    Thanks!

    But for future reference to those you might visit here, if you do as chowcat did then reinstall Kazaa. Yep re-instal it. Then go to ADD/REMOVE programs and REMOVE it. Then, run Spybot or Adaware or both and remove the junk. Never needed to run KazaaBrGone, but would like to hear how well it works.
