Hi everyone, I really appreciate this forum and hope that someone is able to give me a hand!

My internet has been taking up huge amounts of memory. I'm no expert at memory, but with just standard browsing my internet is using average 146,000k of memory according to my Task Manager. It often stops responding, even when no other programs are open! I have a 6 month old HP Pavillion computer, and upgraded the RAM etc, and am on broadband internet - I'm not sure whether these things help or not, but surely I shouldn't be getting that much memory drag?

I wondered whether I'd picked something up, and decided to do some virus/spyware researching, which brought me to Spyware Doctor. I'm always very careful of downloading anything, so I did research, and many reputable websites had highly recommended Spyware Doctor, so I downloaded it. It came up with a message that I had trojan win32.ftp_attack, which of course sent me into a mad panic... Anyway, I ended up PAYING the thieving sobs because I couldn't remove it, and then started experiencing MORE problems, inc popups. Then I did a search on Spyware Doctor Problems and found this link:

    http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=37512

which sort of confirmed what I'd suspected.
    SPYWARE DOCTOR IS SPYWARE!!!
    SPYWARE DOCTOR IS SPYWARE!!!
    SPYWARE DOCTOR IS SPYWARE!!!
    SPYWARE DOCTOR IS SPYWARE!!!

Not happy!!! ANYHOOOOO - I deleted the program, have asked for the 30 day money back, NO response, surprise surprise!

But I still have a concern about the trojan. What I suspect is that there is a file called remind_xp.exe in the Softthinks CD Creator, from HP. This is the same filename of the trojan in question. The only concern I had is that I followed some instructions from mimo2005 (see link below - THANKS MIMO, great post) (y)

    http://forums.techguy.org/security/277726-hijack-log-please-check.html

and I DID find the reminder.exe in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\reminder
PLUS I found heaps of help.htm files in hp\kbd\static too.

    So, please help!
    1. Do I really have the trojan?
    2. Why is my internet using so much memory?

    Thanks a lot!!!

    Naomi x

You aren't using a BETA version of IE 7 are you? When I had one of the BETA's it would use about twice as much memory as the official release. And remember the tabs are like seperate windows in that the more tabs you have open = the more memory it is going to use. You might also want to try and run it in safe mode. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons). See if that runs smoothly. It might be an add-on hogging up memory.

I AM using a beta version, and I really love the little tab sections too!!

Do I have to get rid of it? :(

Is there any other versions that use the tabbed browsing? How do I change back? I keep getting runtime errors at the moment....

    Thanks for your reply... (y)

IE 7 has a final release now, so you don't need to use a beta version. You can go to windows updates and download the real thing.
