About:Blank Homepage Hijacker
Removal Instructions and Help

How did my homepage get set to About:Blank?
The About:Blank homepage hijacker is a variation of a more advanced Cool Web Search hijacker. There are several variants of the About:Blank hijacker and all of them are difficult to remove manually. This hijacker is also referred to as the HomeOldSP hijacker because of the changes to the registry that can be seen using HijackThis such as

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

This is very similar in characteristics to the random dll hijacker also known as HomeSearch Hijacker that came out around the same time. The key to the hijack is a hidden dll file that is connected to a BHO (Browser Hijack Object). This hidden dll file shows up in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

Unfortunately removing this About:Blank hijacker can be difficult. Its a very persistent problem that can return quickly if it is not removed carefully.

How do I Remove the About:Blank homepage hijacker?

There are three basic proven methods that help remove this pesky hijacker, a manual one, one using vbscripts and an automatic one used by a spyware removal program.

MANUAL METHOD

The manual method of removing the About:Blank hijacker is probably the most difficult, since if it is not followed absolutely correctly it can return quickly. There are two programs that are needed to help with this removal. The first is HijackThis and the next is a registry program called Reglite.exe, this particular program for whatever reason seems to be able to find the hidden dll file without the hijacker trying to undo the work and attack the system again.

Once you've downloaded HijackThis and Reglite, open Registrar Lite and navigate to the following entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Look for the Key named AppInit_DLLs, the value in this key is the hidden dll file that is causing your problems. Write down the name of this file and think of it as the hidden.dll file

Secondly, use the Windows Recovery Console in Windows XP to rename the file.

Restart the computer in Recovery Console mode using the Windows XP or Windows 2000 CD or by the option show below

Type cd \windows\system32 and press Enter

Type the following line to remove the read-only characteristic, replacing hidden.dll with the name of the dll file found with RegLite
ATTRIB -R hidden.dll

Rename the hidden.dll file by typing the following command (replacing the word hidden.dll with the actual filename)
RENAME hidden.dll badfile.dll

Type Exit and press Enter to Reboot Windows
another very good and effective removal tool is Adware Away but this will cost you circa $29.
Good Luck.

Hello indalo and Welcome to TSG! :D

Download Ad-Aware SE from here:
http://www.download.com/3001-8022_4-10319876.html

Install and run Ad-Aware SE. On the bottom right corner of Ad-Aware you will see an option called "Check for updates now", click on that and choose "connect". Download the updates. Next click on "Scan now" on the left side of Ad-Aware. Make sure that "Search for negligible risk entries" is crossed out and not ticked. Choose "Perform full system scan" and click "Next". After Ad-Aware scans your computer, Ad-Aware may find some bad files on your computer so make sure you tick them all and choose "Next". It will ask if you want to remove those items so just continue. After removing the items close Ad-Aware.

Download Spybot S&D from here:
http://users.skynet.be/fa936042/spybotsd13.exe

Install and run Spybot S&D. Choose "Search for updates". Next choose "Download updates". After that, choose "Search and Destroy" and click on "Check for problems". If Spybot finds any nasties on your computer, make sure that they are ticked and choose "Fix selected problems".

Download SpywareBlaster from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef

Install and run SpywareBlaster. Click on "Updates" and then choose "Check for updates". Next choose "Protection" and at the top you will see different tabs which are Internet Explorer, Restricted sites and Mozilla/Firefox. Choose one of them at a time and at the bottom click "Protect Against Checked Items" (make sure that all of the items are checked). Tick the boxes above the items. Make sure you do this for all of the top tabs. Mozilla/Firefox you only need to do if you have the user profiles on your computer. You may now exit out of SpywareBlaster.

Download CWShredder from here:
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWSInstall.exe

Install and run CWShredder. Click on "Check for Update" and download the latest updates. Next, click on "Fix". Exit out of CWShredder.

Restart your computer and post a fresh HijackThis log back on this thread.

Thanks for your help Crushbone!

I downloaded and ran the above programs and it seemed to clear everything up, although I was initially hammered with popups and trojan viruses. After running the programs everything seemed okay. When I opened IE everything came back. I could see it visibly add everything that I had deleted. I am at work now so I will run them again later and post the new HijackThis. Is there something that I need to manually delete?

Thanks again.

Hi Crushbone.

I ran all of the programs and here is my new hijackthis log. I am afraid to open Internet Explorer because I think everything will be back. There seem s to be a lot more infections than the first time.

Also, I have a trojan virus in

C:\WINDOWS\System32\soft.exe

Can I delete this without hurting my computer and if so how?

Thanks again for all of your help!

Download DelDomains from here:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

After downloading the file, Right-Click and select "Install". This will get rid of the O15 entries in HijackThis.

You are running an older version of HijackThis, please download the latest version from here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=3155&file=11&evp=3304750663b552982a8baee6434cfc13

Run HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan and save log file".

Post the HijackThis log on this thread.

It's OK, you can open Internet Explorer. When you post the log I will instruct you on what to do next. (y)

Here is the new Hijack This log. I also used to get a message that said I had sspMyDoom.cih. I am sure this is relevant, just don't know how.
Do I need to do all of the above steps every time?
Thanks again

Open Task Manager (ctrl+alt+delete) and choose the "Processes" tab.
Find and "End Process" the following processes:
MPInst.exe
atlec32.exe
sysrq32.exe
dddd.exe
MPTask.exe

csshed20.exe
davsnl.exe
CxtPls.exe

Turn off System Restore by right-clicking on My Computer and choosing "Properties". Click on the "System Restore" tab and put a tick next to "Turn System Restore off". Click "OK".

Go to My Computer and click on "Tools" then "Folder Options. Click on the "View" tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is enabled. Click "OK".

Find and delete the following files and folders:
C:\Program Files\M-Audio MobilePre
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlec32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sysrq32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dddd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\csshed20.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\davsnl.exe
C:\Program Files\CxtPls

If you are unable to delete any of them, then make sure that you check to see if the processes that I mentioned above are not running and end them again. Then try deleting the file.

Open Internet Explorer and at the top click on "Tools" and choose "Internet Options". Click on the "Advanced" tab and untick "Enable third-party browser extensions". Click on "Apply" then "OK".

Run HijackThis and fix the following entries:

Hi Crushbone.

M-Audio (MPInst.exe) wouldn't delete or shutoff. It is a Pre amp program for recording music (I installed). Do I have to delete this?

Here is the new hijackthis log

This is legit:

O4 - Global Startup: M-Audio MobilePre Control Panel Launcher.lnk = C:\Program Files\M-Audio MobilePre\MPTask.exe

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MobilePreUSB-main-1.html

The C:\Program Files\M-Audio MobilePre folder should not be deleted

Click here to download cwsserviceremove.zip and unzip it to your desktop and have it ready to run later.
___________________________________________________________________________

Click here to download CWShredder. Do Not run it yet. Download it to the desktop and have it ready to run later.

____________________________________________________________________

Click here to download AboutBuster created by Rubber Ducky.

Unzip AboutBuster to the Desktop then click the "Update Button" then click "Check for Update" and download the updates and then click "Exit" because I don't want you to run it yet. Just get the updates so it is ready to run later in safe mode.
_____________________________________________________________________

Now go ahead and set your computer to show hidden files like so:

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"
______________________________________________________________________

Sign off the internet and remain offline until this procedure is complete. Unplug your modem or disconnect the cable or phone line. Copy these instructions to notepad and save them on your desktop for easy access. You must follow these directions exactly and you cannot skip any part of it.
______________________________________________________________________

Restart to safe mode.

How to start your computer in safe mode

Perform the following steps in safe mode:

____________________________________________________________________

Double click on the cwsserviceremove.reg file you downloaded at the beginning to enter into the registry. Answer yes when asked to have it's contents added to the registry.
____________________________________________________________________

Go to Start > Run and type Hijackthis. Press enter to start HijackThis. DO NOT OPEN ANYTHING ELSE!

Put a check by these entries in Hijack This and click the "Fix Checked" button:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B35C1993-8255-9D99-D038-EAC35EC43F3A} - C:\WINDOWS\mfcng.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoUpdater] "C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atlbq.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlbq.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [antiware] C:\windows\system32\elitedzx32.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [nethy.exe] C:\WINDOWS\nethy.exe

Find and delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\iplz.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlbq.exe
C:\windows\system32\elitedzx32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\nethy.exe

delete this folder:

C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Owner (Repeat for all user names)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

________________________________________________________________________

Next run aboutbuster. Double click aboutbuster.exe, click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them.
_______________________________________________________________________

Finally, run CWShredder. Just click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.
_______________________________________________________________________

Boot back into Windows normally now.

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer.

Go here and do an online virus scan.

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location so you can delete it yourself. Housecall will detect the leftover files from this hijacker.

This hijacker is known to alter or delete certain files so check this out please:

Download the Hoster from here . UnZip the file and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file.
Go here and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing your Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy)

Check in the C:\Windows\system32 folder to be sure you have a file named Shell.dll. If you do not have one, go to the C:\Windows\system32\dllcache folder.
Find shell.dll and right click on it. Choose Copy from the menu.
Open the System32 folder and right click on an empty space in the window. Choose Paste from the menu.

control.exe may have been deleted.
See if control.exe is present in C:\windows\system32

If control.exe isn't there, go here, and download control.exe per the instructions at the site.

IMPORTANT!: Please check your ActiveX security settings. They may have been changed by this CWS variant to allow ALL ActiveX!! Reset your active x security settings like so... Go to Internet Options > Security > Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

When you are sure you are clean turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Hi,
I did the above and everything seems to be better. There are still a couple of BHO's. The problem now is that when I ran the "Hoster" and "Restored Original Hosts" my internet explorer got screwed up. I am connected to the internet, but I can't open my browser. Good news is that I have my homepage back. Do you know what happend to IE?

Thanks

Hoster should not have done anything to make you lose your internet connection. How are you getting online now?

Try this to restore the connection:

Click here to download LspFix. It will fit on a floppy.

Launch the application, and click finish (Don't do anything else).

Post another HJT log please.

Click here to download getservice.zip and unzip it to your desktop. Open the Getservice folder and click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up with a long list of Services. Please save that notepad file and attach it to your next reply to this thread. It will be easier to attach it rather than copy and paste because it will be too long to paste in one post.

Download the Registry Search Tool here:

http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/

Unzip it and run it. If your antivirus inteferres you may have to disable script blocking in the antivirus. Copy and Paste the following in the search box:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\engeaucn6.exe

Copy and paste the results here.

Ran the search and did not find any instances of
C:\WINDOWS\System32\engeaucn6.exe
I think I added the 017 entry because I added the dns to hoster. can I delete this?
I attached the getservice text

Thanks
