Please help, My pc got infected with a virus called Downloader.trojan. I have windows xp, now I'm pestered by those horrible pop up ads, unauthorized sites add themselves to my desktop icons. I get this pop up from Golden palace.com all the time even when I'm not online, when attempting to close it, it covers the entire screen and freezes my pc. I downloaded addware and spybot from AOL 9.0 and is not helping the problem. I will appreciate any help

    Thanks!!

Have you tried a system restore?

It might be a good idea to download Hijack This and post a scan log for the experts to take a look at.

Please do this. Click here: http://www.sherrylynn.us/HijackThis.exe to download Hijack This. Save it to it’s own folder (not temporary files or the desktop).
Close all open windows and open HIJACK THIS. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and save it to NotePad. Copy the entire log and paste it here.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed. Wait for someone to analyze the scan and advise.

Hi, this is my scan using HijackThis, I will appreciate all the help!!! Also, when I checked my local disk(c) drive, there's a folder under casino for golden casino palace. The size is 5.03MB, folders:00000200.tmb,00000960.tmp,00000db4.tmp,
files: casino exe, casino.hlp, direct sound driver.dll, i believe this is the pop up that caused all my headaches. Thank you again!!!

You do have some bad stuff in there that even I can see so before we call on the experts, why don't you go ahead and clear out some adware and malware by installing and running the following programs.

    AD-AWARE

    Go here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
    and download Ad-Aware 6 Build 181

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right-hand corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window: Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use custom scanning options then click Customize and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan within archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning engine select Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select Let windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

    Restart your computer

Download and run: SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY, here:

    http://download.com.com/3000-2144-1...tml?tag=lst-0-1

Open Spybot Search & Destroy (Click Start, Programs, Spybot S&D (Advanced Mode). Click online, Search for updates, Download all available updates. Close all Browser windows, Click ''Check for Problems'', Put a check in every entry Spybot Search & Destroy flags with a red exclamation mark and click ''Fix Selected Problems'' , Then restart your computer.

Download both of these for added protection: SPYWAREBLASTER & SPYWAREGUARD, here:

    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

I see you saved Hijack This to your desktop. You should put it in a folder of its own either in Program files or somewhere else but not on the desktop or in the Temporary files. You can redownload the program to its own folder and once you've done all of the above post another log and we can ask the experts to analyse it for you.

This way we will probably get rid of lots of stuff so there will be less to deal with.

The bad stuff that I recognized is now gone. Let's wait a bit for an expert to analyse the log now and confirm if anything else needs to be fixed.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

    Restart your computer.

Also you really need to trim down some of those unnecessary startups. They don't need to load with windows and will slow your machine's performance considerably.

    Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to restart. Go ahead and restart.

Upon restart you will be confronted with a dialogue box warning about running in selective startup. Just ignore that message and put a check in the box by "Don't show me this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click "OK". You will not be bothered by the message again.

Keep in mind that some entries will be re-enabled in the startups each time you use that particular program. Therefore, you will have to find the option in that programs preferences that says something like "Load with Windows" or "Run when Windows Starts" and disable that option.

Go here for info on msconfig:

You can look up the startups here to help determine what is needed and what is not:
