Lets do a couple online scans.

    One: Click Here

    Two: Click Here

Be sure to list anything they can't fix.

    Post a new HijackThis log.

    I suggest you do this:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Winad Client] C:\Program Files\Winad Client\Winad.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebRebates0] "C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe"

    Restart in safe mode:
shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key. The Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu appears.
Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected. In most cases, it is the first item in the list and is selected by default. (If it is not selected, use the arrow keys to select it.)
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode. This can take a few minutes.

    While in Safe Mode:

Note: You might need to use Add/Remove Programs to remove these.

    C:\Program Files\Winad Client <---Delete Folder
    C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates <---Delete Folder

    1. Open My Computer
    2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
    3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
    4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
    5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
    6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files

    7. Click OK and windows will comply.

What free firewall do you suggest. I see many listed, Sygate and ZoneAlarm seem to be popular. Thanks for all the help.

I use Sygate myself, but my understanding is ZoneAlarm is good also.

Log looks good to me (y)

Open Spybot and click mode on the toolbar, then advanced mode. Click immunize in the left pane, then immunize again, this time from above with the green + beside it. Click the link bellow for SpywareBlaster, download, install and update. Check for updates weekly. Still in Spybot, click tools in the left pane, then click IE tweaks and at least lock the HOSTS file. Then download and install IESpyads.

That will give you an added layer of protection against unwanted parasites.

Thank you very much. I donated $10 to the site earlier today. I appreciate all the help everyone has given. My knowledge of computer security has tripled since finding this site. Hopefully I'll be able to help someone else with what I now know.

I noticed that you're not up to date on your Microsoft critical updates. W2K is up to Service Pack 4 and you have none of them.

IMPORTANT!: You should go to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp and install all "Critical Updates and Service Packs". This will patch numerous security holes in IE and Windows. Otherwise, you are leaving your computer open and vulnerable.

Can we mark this solved now?
