Help! IE and Outlook still only available in safe mode. Removed all winupdate25838303[1].exe that I can find (all users).
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = C:\WINDOWS\blank.htm, has come back in recent HJT scans. When in normal mode something is using IE in background, computer is very slow (locks up with simple tasks). Found and removed new file, C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmpf00.exe. I hope I did the right thing. Here is my latest scan.

I know you have these but let's run them again

    Spybot

Click on "Search For updates" When prompted.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, and click Check for Problems. Once the scan is complete, have SpyBot remove all it finds marked in RED.

    Adaware SE

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window: Click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Reboot and post another HJT log for review.

Spybot found and removed EffectiveBandToolbar and Haxdoor-H. Nothing found with Adaware SE.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmpf00.exe came back, I did not remove. I tried to start in normal mode. Spygaurd is fending off a homepage hijacker again. I cannot acess IE because something is already using it in background (I forget what the error says). When I shut down I have to end task IE.

I restarted in safe mode. Ran Spybot and Adaware with same results as first time. I did not remove C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmpf00.exe. Should I remove?

Reboot (safe mode again). Here is the latest HJT scan. I appreciate your help.

Did you run this in safe mode?
What are you using for Anti virus?
What are you using for firewall?

Safe mode was used. I have Norton anti-virus and firewall. Subscription has lapsed.
At work right now, will be able to make suggested corrective actions at home this evening.

OK, You are not protecting your machine with old anti virus applications.

Check out some of the free AV packages here: Security Help Tools you will also find firewall recommendations.

Please post your HJT log in normal mode.

I haven't installed new AV or firewall yet.

Started in normal mode and ran Spybot and Adaware with same results as before (Haxdoor-H, EffectiveBandToolbar).

Ran HJT and saved scan. Attempted to access IE (program was busy).

Restarted in safe mode to access IE.

Here is my normal mode HJT scan.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [secboot] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mszx23.exe !!
    O16 - DPF: {0EC4C9E3-EC6A-11CF-8E3B-444553540000} (WaveTab Control) - http://www.riffinteractive.com/setup/RiffLick.cab
    O16 - DPF: {A8F2B9BD-A6A0-486A-9744-18920D898429} (ScorchPlugin Class) - http://www.sibelius.com/download/so...tiveXPlugin.cab

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

    Restart in safe mode

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab. Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Now click "Apply to all folders" Click "Apply" then "OK".

    Delete this file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mszx23.exe

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator (Repeat for all user names)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.

    Empty your recycle bin.

    Reboot and post another log.

Updated Norton AV and firewall installed.

Safe mode (C:\WINDOWS\system32\mszx23.exe) removed. It took a few reboots to remove. It kept coming back.

Owner Temp folder had items that fought deletion. Folder empty (for now).

    Tempory Internet Files deleted.

    Recycle Bin empty.

Rebooted to normal mode and scanned HJT.

Rebooted to safe mode to access IE and post log.
