This computer belongs to my girlfriend's mother. She's complaining that the system is quite slow and stops responding frequently. I've reviewed her HijackThis log and made recommendations for some items to be removed and she has done that but no significant performance increase was manifest. She's running Trend Micro anti-virus and firewall and I thought maybe on this class system (300 mHz) that this version of TM might be (part of) the problem but she said that the problems started when she was using ZoneAlarm. Even so, there are six processes associated with TM running. That's a lot IMO.

Anyway, any suggestions will be appreciated.

Disable the Spybot tea timer it has been known for it to cause problems,if you find the computer runs better without it get rid of it altogether .....

I tend to agree with you about Trend, there is a lot running in there, why not try this very well known and liked free anti-virus http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/lng/us/tpl/v5

My computer froze up all the time using Zone Alarm, once I uninstalled it- my problems ended. I found it a little difficult to uninstall.

Thanks both of you for your input. I'll advise her to disable the TM software and see if the performance improves. Does anyone know anything about Sygate's free firewall? Is it any good/better than ZoneAlarm?

    Thanks again
