    the audio in my laptop now works...thanks for your help etaf...but i still have a problem regarding my windows media player9...it cannot play dvd files...it says i need a dvd decoder and i dont know what that means..how can i solve this problem?...how will i know what compatible dvd driver matches my laptop specs?

    how did you solve the audio issue?
    what type of DVD files ?
    are this off the web with an extension of .flv

    i downloaded the sound driver from the link you gave me and luckily, it worked...so thanks to you...as for the windows media player, i installed an XP codec and i can now play videos from the dvd-rom...my problem now is i cant install the nero 7 ultra edition, it says i have to install first the directX 9.0c from the microsoft before i can install the nero 7 ultra edition...so i installed the directX 9.0c, still i cant install nero 7....i tried nero 8 and it says "cannot update MSI engine"

    from what I can see its due to an older version of nero, not removed correctly - lots of issues on the web with this - suggestion is to use nero uninstall / cleaning tools to remove old installation

    I would suggest that you get the SP3 for XP. Microsoft is no longer supporting SP2 so your computer may be more vulnerable to baddies.
