    Hi all,

Please review my HJ. I have various problems with my puter lately. The most obvious is that when I try to open internet explorer, the only thing that appears is the top Welcome to MSN line and nothing else. I crash a lot...physical dumping (sounds obscene), shut down because of corrupt files.etc. About a month ago, reinstalled MS XP because all the desk icons disappeared and we really haven't been right since. So Please review and I thank you in advance:

    Hi Judgejudy

Let me know if you are using this infected pc to reach this forum/Internet at all....or do you have another pc there?

You should print this information, we have a Print button available up in Thread Tools drop down arrow (at the start of every thread, your original posting)... that prints a text version of this page so you can stay off the Net and will have these directions. If you have another pc available that is just as good, so you can reach us and read instructions. The information in this post can also be saved to a text file you can keep handy.

First you must move Hijackthis.exe to a permanent folder, as the backups it makes will be saved whereever it is run, the temp folders will be removed and you will not have these backups.
You will find it easiest to download a new HJT (if you can reach the Internet that is, or from another pc, HjT fits easily on a floppy disk you can simply copy it from disk to this pc, to the folder you make. Right click empty spot of your desktop, select New>Folder and when the folder box opens, rename by typing over new folder> HJT. This will create a folder named HJT right on your desktop and backups will be saved there. Download Hijackthis again Or if you know how, drag/drop the original Hijackthis.exe to the HJT folder and run it from there- not yet tho>

From Add/Remove Programs or Change/Remove Programs, look in the list for Deal Helper and uninstall it.

    {EDIT:: Uninstall WinTools, also}

Uninstall any strange looking searchbars, toolbars except Google's- you dont appear to be using MSN toolbar or Yahoo's, those are OK if you do have them.

You are basically looking for the ad-based junk programs
Incredifind is one of those...get rid of that.

Press the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys once, when the Task Manager opens, End Task on these if running- may take a couple of tries but make sure they do stop running.

    msgked.exe
    dhsvr.exe
    dhbrwsr.exe

    NEXT:

Run Hijackthis.exe from the HJT folder, have no other windows open, no browsers, nothing but HJT open, and put a checkmark next to all of these you see running:

You will not find all of these, but if they do show when you run HJT, fix them:

    C:\WINDOWS\DHUpdt.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\dhbrwsr.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\dhsvr.exe

When you are done, please post a fresh HJT log here.

    Hi Judgejudy:
    {Please see my EDIT about uninstalling WinTools from Add/Remove programs in my reply above}

As further information- you do not have XP SP1 and have not done Windows Updates (Internet Explorer SP 1) . After the fixing, you must do these! Is there a problem running Windows Updates---I need to know if so! You will be probably be reinfected if you cannot do them. One thing that will cause Windows Update problems is having your time/date set wrong...check that it is correct as to Time Zone, AM/PM, etc.
You will also at some point face up with XP SP2 which is able to be installed now, and with an infected pc things are a lot more difficult> you also need SP1 first.

I should have advised this in my reply, but it was getting long....you also should disable System Restore which flushes all the infected Restore Points off the computer, you can enable Restore after the fixing and create a new Restore Point.

    Byteman,

Thanks for responding. I am able to access this site thru my "infected computer". When I went to uninstall deal helper, i received a message that i must remove all of the deal helper ad supported software from my computer. Not sure where to go to find that. I also do not see "WinTools" in my add/remove program. I appreciate your response. I will be looking for an answer in the next few hours. If not....i will be back on tuesday...vacation time!

    thanks

Hi, If that message comes up in response to you selecting "Remove" but you did not go any farther, try the uninstall. That will not uninstall the bad parts, this is very common with ad-based software, they leave a lot behind...I am assuming that this is what the message refers to. We can clean up with Hijackthis and AdAware etc. Sometimes, the Programs entry for things like WinTools does not appear, that is OK< you wrote that you "reinstalled XP" and that could be a factor for why the entry is not there....no problem, just do the work as I explained. Have a good vacation . When you get back, these posts will be somewhere like page 50 (um maybe a few less) but you can easily find your thread by signing into TSG and looking under your User ID using the Search button>then Advanced> type in your user ID (Judgejudy) which will promptly pop up your posts here in all forums in a list.
DealHelper may also uninstall from it's own uninstall feature from Start> All Programs> Deal Helper try that.

    Hi Byteman,

Back from vacation and back to stress! Here is my new HJ. I see the C:\\WINDOWS\DHUpdt.exe, dhbrwsr.exe and dhsvr.exe. I cannot locate the C:\PROGRA~1\incred~1\bho\incFIN~1.dLL nor the C:\\WINDOWS\System32\mskhhe.dll. What next?

    Hi judgejudy-

    1. If you know what Safe Mode is and how to start the computer to Safe Mode, pass this part by and go to step 2:

To start in Safe Mode, tap the F8 key several times when the system starts up, and when you see the startup menu, select Safe Mode> give it plenty of time to get there.
The video looks funny as a lot of drivers, including video, are not loaded, this is a diagnostic mode for Windows, and it is normal to look that way. When you restart and do not press any keys (Normal startup) the video will be back same as it was. We need to do some steps in Safe Mode and some not so watch for the notations about that. Print this if you need to> there is a Thread Tools button at the top of every page (first post at top of this page) that will let you print text only version of this thread's page).

    2. Start the computer to Safe Mode.

Open Add/Remove Programs or Change/Remove and run the uninstaller for DealHelper and answer the questions. I have filled out this questionaire too> just put anything.
Say yes but watch what you are reading, they word it tricky, make sure you click to uninstall not keep, the software. The automatic uninstall works best.

Anything also like OfferOptimizer can go if there.

Also look for an Incredifind entry, run uninstall for that. You may or may not be prompted to restart, do that but again tap F8 to go to safe mode...

    3. Run Hijackthis, close Windows Explorer> no other windows open, hit the SCAN button, wait for it to finish, and fix the entries I have here:

    C:\WINDOWS\DHUpdt.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\dhbrwsr.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\dhsvr.exe

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {5D60FF48-95BE-4956-B4C6-6BB168A70310} - (no file)

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {D848A3CA-0BFB-4DE0-BA9E-A57F0CCA1C13} - (no file)

Put checks next to each one on your scan list> and click Fix checked to remove them.

    Still from Safe Mode:
    Open Windows Explorer.

Make sure the following settings are done:

There may be a temp folder under your user name also, in the Documents and Settings\yourusername\.

Now, find and delete these FILES> in list below. The files should all be found in the "D" area in the long lists of Windows files....highlight them carefully...and click delete key for each one. If you get any messages about "being in use by Windows" do this:

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL keys together, once, to bring up the Task or Process Manager>> and highlight any of them that are there, and press End Process, wait for the End Task confirmation box to come up, if it does not after a minute of so, press CTRL+ALT+DEL again, when the next box comes up, End Task on any of those items. You may also see a random named item like this: msgked.exe or msibkd.exe or mskhhe.exe --do the same for any of those or any RANDOM thing like:
kfnboaq..... [[something that is just random letters, not a legit process like Systray... ]]

I don't expect all of these to be found, but you must look and if found, delete them:

    C:\WINDOWS\DHUpdt.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\dhbrwsr.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\dhsvr.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\mskhhe.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msibkd.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\msgked.exe

Empty the Recycle Bin, verify that files are gone from the Bin, and restart normally.

Now, run HJT, same as before, no other windows open, no Internet windows open, scan, save log, copy and paste it to a reply here in your thread and we will give it a lookover to see what needs to be done if anything....

    Byteman,

Here is what my HJ looks like now. I still couldn't uninstall DealHelper either by Change/Remove or by the desktop icon. I did find it under Program files and sent it to the recycle bin. Don't know if that was okay to do. Did not empty recycle bin (only item there).

Here is what my HJ looks like now:

Hi, I'm happy if you are. No bad entries that I see in the HJT log.
That's quite a trimdown in running processes, judge>

Ah- was the HJT log done in safe mode? It's OK as long as the Dh things are not showing in Normal mode. I'm trying to figure out what happened, looks almost like you reinstalled XP...

Someday get SP1> keep Windows updated all you can.
It's easy to get this stuff back!

Hang onto the DealHelper files for a few days, just make sure they dont get restored out of there.

I really am curious about the 12 or so no longer showing processes? If you have time...

Hi Judgejudy- You will have to go to these pages and read up on getting Service Pack 2, there are requirements you have to have done, one of them is to install SP1 FIRST Servers may be busy also...
But you do have to get SP1 and several updates, before you will be able to get SP2. SP1 does not show in your HJT log header info, so I am assuming you have not gotten that yet, or it failed... that can indicate several things.

Try just going to the Windows Update site, when the scan for updates finishes, uncheck SP1 ((it is I think a single update, you cannot get all other updates AND SP1 together...it should tell you in the More Info page or right in the update box that it is only available as a single update> those marked with an * are that way.(you will probably have to restart after the first bunch, if you are offered a group of updates)

Then try for SP1 >>After SP1 downloads and installs, you can try things out, read the info about what you need to do before installing SP/2 and try to get it if you like.

There really is no rush to get SP2, and several things you should check on, such as the programs you use...Microsoft and other sites have a list of programs that might have trouble after installing Service Pack 2.

Service Pack 2 does install some new things and is more security capable, so it is good to have but only if you prepare your computer for it and have a way to prepare yourself for what if any settings you may have to mess around with. There are a lot of people downloading it, and depending on your Internet connection, speed, server traffic, you may not be able to download it right now.

    http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/WindowsXP.htm--
scroll down to Service Pack 2 section--very good info and links for help.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

    http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-service-pack-2.html

Now about the HJT log-- That is OK about the Safe Mode log, and the new log does not show anything bad.
