    Hi,

My computer was recently infected with a trojan that caused my computer to get popups windows about WinAntivirus software while I am browsing the Internet. While I thought I was able to remove the associated file(s), I still kept getting the popups. I believe the culprit (or one of them at least) is this file called pmkhi.dll. I was able to delete it from the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. However, I was not able to remove the registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\pmkhi. Everytime I delete the key, it is back as soon as I refresh the registry screen. There are 2 other keys associated with pmkhi.dll in the registry and the same problem occurs. As soon as I delete the registry keys, they reappear.

I also noticed that there is a browser helper object in my Internet Explorer add-ons that has the name pmkhi.dll. I disable it and everything is fine. But when I reboot my computer, it is automatically enabled. I don't know if there is anyway to remove this add-on from IE.
The strange thing is that even though the file pmkhi.dll has been deleted from the system32 folder, somehow I still get the popups, and those registry entires keep reappearing. I suspect there is another file(s) causing this.

I am running Windows XP. I have several different antispyware software that I have run and none have been able to resolve this issue. I have run VundoFix v5.1.6 and it was not able to find any files. I have run scans using Adaware, Spybot, Spy Sweeper, Ewido, Windows Defender, Spy Hunter, and Norton Antivirus. Nothing was ever detected. I have run registry cleaners as Registry Mechanic and RegSupreme Pro and that did not solve my problem. I used ATF_Cleaner and Norton One Button Checkup to clean any unnecessary files. That didn't help. I checked my HijackThis log and could not find anything out of the ordinary. I did see the entry for pmkhi.dll. But when I remove it through HijackThis, it reappears again.

I will post my HijackThis log to see if anyone can find something I couldn't see.

    Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
    • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
    • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
    • Turn your computer back on.
    • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.

    Hi,

As I mentioned in my previous post, I ran VundoFix and it found no files to fix. However, I did what you said and downloaded again to my desktop and ran it as a task. Again, it did not find anything.

I will post my HijackThis log again, but it will show nothing different.

    • In case it says that nothing has been found, Right click the list box (white box) in the main VundoFix window.
    • Select Add More Files? from the menu that comes up. This will open a new VundoFix window.
    • In the Window: copy and paste the following in the first field: C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhi.dll
    • Copy and paste the following in the second field: C:\WINDOWS\System32\ihkmp.*
    • Click the Add Files button.
    • Click the Close Window button.
    • Click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
    • Turn your computer back on.
    • A log will be created, C:\vundofix.txt which you will need to include in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

    Hi,

Well it looks like that did the trick! I removed pmkhi.dll! Even though going into that folder didn't show the file, the Vundofix program was able to fix it! I guess the file was hidden, even though I had the "show hidden files" option on. Here is the VundoFix log.

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

I see you have poker sites installed. These types of sites are high risk for malware, which often gets installed without your knowledge. So if you're not using them, I recommend you uninstall them.

Click Here and download Killbox and save it to your desktop but don’t run it yet.

Rescan with HijackThis, close all browser windows except HijackThis, put a check mark beside these entries and click fix checked.

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A61E4A65-FF2D-4AEB-A39C-5C510F89375C} - (no file)

    Then boot to safe mode:

How to restart to safe mode

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
    • Put a tick by Standard File Kill.
    • In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time:

      C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxusrr.dll

      C:\WINDOWS\system32\ihkmp.bak2

      C:\WINDOWS\system32\ihkmp.ini

      C:\WINDOWS\system32\ihkmp.ini2

      C:\WINDOWS\system32\ihkmp.tmp

    • Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file.
    • It will ask for confirmation to delete the file.
    • Click Yes.
    • Continue with that procedure until you have pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.
    • Killbox may tell you that one or more files do not exist.
    • If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.
    • Next in Killbox go to Tools > Delete Temp Files
    • In the window that pops up, put a check by ALL the options there except these three:
      • XP Prefetch
      • Recent
      • History
    • Now click the Delete Selected Temp Files button.
    • Exit the Killbox.

Boot back to Windows normally and post another HijackThis log please.

I didn't realize there were more files to remove.

Ultimatebet poker software that is downloaded has not caused me any problems. I believe they are a legitimate site and I have had their software on my computer for a while now. None of the anti-spyware programs have detected it as malware.

I just realized that those files I deleted were not just hidden, but they were also marked as system files! The lengths these people go to to install their malware on your computer!

Initially I wasn't able to remove the R0 entry, but I did so after the Killbox procedure was finished.

Here is the latest HijackThis log, hopefully, it is clean!

    You're welcome. :)

Now you should turn system restore off to flush out all previous system restore points, then turn it back on and create a new restore point:

To turn off system restore, on the Desktop, right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a new restore point, click on Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools and then select System Restore.

In the System Restore wizard, select Create a restore point and click the Next button.

Type a name for your new restore point then click on Create.

I also recommend downloading SPYWAREBLASTER for added protection.

Read here for info on how to tighten your security.

    Delete your temporary files:

In safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit - Select All then Edit - Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start - Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit - Select All then hit Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel - Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

While still in safe mode, go to Start - Run and copy and paste then click OK:

    shell:cache\content.ie5

This should open your content.ie5 folder. Select everything in there and click delete. You will not be able to delete the index.bat file and that’s normal.

    Empty the recycle bin.

    ***

You also should trim down your start-ups as there are too many running and this will affect performance. You can research them at these sites and if they aren’t required at start-up then you can uncheck them in msconfig via Start - Run - type msconfig and then click on the start-up tab.
