    Help required please ......

I have a Packard Bell Store and Save 3500 portable hard drive. As a photographer, I store all my images on here along with backing up my files etc. However, when I plug the USB cable into either my laptop or PC, the message "one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it". As you can imagine, I am extremely concerned that I may have now lost all my files / documents and images. Could anybody please advise. Thank you.

Sounds like the drive has failed. Try it in another machine.

Use the originals that you backed up to make a new backup as soon as possible in case your main hard drive fails (and it will, eventually, and often when you need it the most).

Portable drives are good for backups, because you still have the originals elsewhere, but they are very delicate and fail with just a mild bump, so are not reliable as storage media of first choice.
