Howdy folks, I borrowed a friends external hard drive to back up some of my stuff onto it as well but without thinking have used my power supply cord instead of his. I seems they are rated differently and HD has since stopped working with a definate burnt smell from the enclosure. I would like to find out if his data on it is likley to be gone for good. I am unable to get to a data recovery service some were due to my remote location so i was hoping to try my luck at doing it myself. Would anyone know of any resources on the web i can use.

If you can't power it up then you can buy another enclosure and remove the HDD from that one you have now and retry. If you are lucky it will just have blown the enclosure and the HDD and the data will still be safe :)
