I have some entries in my registry that look like they may be harmful, but I'm not sure. I don't know enough about Windows to mess with my registry on my own. In hkey_current_user/software/microsoft/searchassistant/acmru/5603 there are these entries that look like they may be the result of crapware.

    001 REG_SZ iefeatures.exe
    003 REG_SZ *.hta
    004 REG_SZ adserve
    005 REG_SZ msblast.exe
    006 REG_SZ ms

I had the msblast worm and fixed that with a removal tool I downloaded from symantec. I got frustrated with the iefeatures spyware, because it kept self installing, so I disabled it from starting up in msconfig. I have Spybot S&D and IESpyad. I use the immunize feature in spybot also. I have Windows XP.
Once I get cable internet, I'm going to download all the critical updates from Microsoft. I'll quit rambling now and I'd appreciate any advice you guys could give.

Download HijackThis from http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe & unzip it into it's own, permanent folder, not a temporary one. Start HJT & press the scan button. When the scan is finished the scan button will change to save. Save the log to a text file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET.

Click on the link below to download CWshredder.
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip

Run the program and let it do it's thing. Make sure to click on "Fix" and not scan only.

Next: Make a folder on your hard drive, like c:\hjt and move hijackthis.exe into it. Don't run it from your desktop!!

    Run HJT again and check:

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{3E8D71DD-69F8-4B2E-82E5-0B73D65FAF2A}: NameServer = 207.217.120.83 207.217.77.82
    O19 - User stylesheet: C:\WINDOWS\Web\tips.ini
    O19 - User stylesheet: C:\WINDOWS\hh.htt (HKLM)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

    Reboot.
Now go to Microsoft and make sure you have all of the critical patches for your OS and IE.

Post another log after you are done. :)

Would you recommend using a browser other than IE?

this hijacker I have seems to take over randomly, sometimes when I reboot it changes my start page, and other times it doesn't. It hasn't changed the start page as of now, but we'll see. Well I'm off to hit some golf balls, I'll check back later. Thanks!
