Hello, I am hoping someone can help me.
I submitted a picture via e-mail to my local newspaper and they e-mailed me that it is on the small size.

My picture is a JPEG. and 640X480 145KB is there any way for me to get it to the dimensions below?
This is the message that I got from the newspaper:

Unfortunately, the photo image you recently forwarded for SignPost is a
    little on the small side.

As a guideline your photo image must be a minimum 210 dpi in
resolution, measure roughly 4 x 6 inches and be saved as a JPEG.
Following these sizing parameters should generate a file that is
    approximately 3-3.4 Mb in size.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    a 6" x 4" image at 210 Pixels per inch
    would need

    6 x 210 = 1260
    4 x 210 = 840

    so 1260 x 840 pixels

you have 640 x 480 - so not enough pixels

now to get it larger you can use special software like genuine fractuals - or some techniques in photoshop, although you are almost increasing by 100%

but all expensive and you may not get good results

Can you attach it here ... I have fractals.
But will have to install and re-learn it.

Upsizing it will make it fit their requirements .. but not increase the resolution (image sharpness)
    i.e ... It'll still look the same.

Irfanview will do the up size for free almost as well as GF or PS

Can you post the picture here or is it to personal? So we can have a look

Do you have a larger version of the original?

Although as etaf hinted at... 145KB is long way from 3MB

    I have it as well

Don't bother... Photoshop does just as good a job... Irfanview is right there with them

You"ll be hard pressed to get a 3MB file from 640x480

I just upped a 600x399x135dpi to 1260x838x210dpi and saved at full quality in Photoshop and the file size was 618KB

Didn't think Fractals would help much... since I see some jpeg distortion.
Here's one with the "normal" photoshop upsizing.

Yes .. do you have a better original that hasn't been edited ??

Also be aware that that image is not in a 6x4 ratio... it is in a 3:2 ration so there will be some cropping from the top and or bottom depending where you take it...

This is at 210 ppi at a 3:2 ratio ie: 6x4 jpg saved at 5 on the quality scale in Photoshop 178KB...

The same file saved at full quality is still only 436KB

You will lose the feet or the top of the hill to get to 4x6...

Buck … I didn’t think the numbers added up either.
Considering what a newspaper does to a picture and what their asking for is analogous to requesting an Aircraft Carrier to make a Flyswatter with.

Thinking that they may only be looking at the file size and pixel dimensions …
... I tried to add a destroyer to go with the aircraft carrier.

Etaf … You trying to make a Navy :D

etaf ... you must have saved that as a tiff or bmp to get that size file? why?

    Hi Noyb

I have a hard time understanding newspaper requests for 300 DPI... No doubt it is a throw back to days gone by in the printing press business... They are only printing on toliet paper why the fuss for big/high ppi

As we speak/type I am in the middle of printing 6 30x20 x200ppi landscapes... for a friend/photographer to go in her gallery...

    The 300 dpi/ppi is a bunch of crap... ;)

That is the only picture that I have. I never edited it.

It was taken in Mexico at the ruins and the newspaper here in Canada post pictures of vacationers.

Thank you all for trying to help. It means a lot to me. I will submit the photo that NOYB re-did for me. Hopefully it works. Thanks again!

    :)

I was wondering where the Pyramids were .. I'm jealous.

If you' haven't submitted it yet ... I've edited the picture ..
and tried to remove the distraction at the bottom.
