Hello,
Wondering if anyone can help me please?
My laptop has become a bit weird the last week.
It has been running quite slow on the internet (firefox) and the fans have been really noisy so I checked the task manager and it keeps running at 100% for various programs.
The programs that had the highest cpu were ones i didn't recognise.
For a couple of days it was mobsynch.exe, then that was replaced by rundll32.exe.
I ended these processes but they reappeared about 20 minutes later and slowed everything down again.
Then they have gone and i have got iexplore.exe showing. Through google I believe this is IE but if I open IE it freezes and 2 show in task manager. 1 of them shows even if I don't have IE open but just runs at about 0-5 cpu.
Sorry if this doesn't make sense but I am not that good on computers.

I have run (in normal and safe mode) free avg, spybot S&D, and adaware 2007 but they do not find anything.

I have just backed up my photos to disk incase it is anything bad and have downloaded that hijackthis so the log is below.

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

Combofix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished.

Note: During this process, it would help a great deal and be very much appreciated if you would refrain from installing any new software or hardware on this machine, unless absolutely necessary, until the clean up process is finished as it makes our job more tedious, with additional new files that may have to be researched, which is very time consuming.

Also, please do not run any security programs or fixes on your own as doing so may compromise what we will be doing. It is important that you wait for instructions.

Thank you for your reply.
The first attempt to run Combo ust stuck for about an hour so I had to restart and try again. This semmed to work ok.

I don't see anything yet other than some settings.

Open Notepad and copy and paste the text in the code box below into it:

Code:
Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"C:\\Program Files\\SopCast\\adv\\SopAdver.exe"=-
"C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe"=-
Save the file to your desktop and name it CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into the ComboFix.exe as shown in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. It may ask to reboot. Post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Hello again,
I have done as you advised.
The laptop seems to be running a lot better though, the fans haven't come on atall and the CPU is pretty steady so maybe it is better.
In the task manager when i have nothing open it has an explorer.exe that uses 2 CPU for a second every 30 seconds or so and only 1 iexplore.exe which only comes on when I open internet explorer. So it really does seem better.
Are these 2 programs both internet explorer?

Anyway, here are logs as requested.

Thank you for your help so far.
Do you think it is ok to use internet banking then, as I have refrained since this happened.

As a precaution I would change your passwords from another computer for log in and on-line banking. If you can do your banking from another computer until we're sure the machine is clean, that would be the best option.

Go to the Control Panel - Add/Remove programs and remove:

NetMeter

Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply along with a new Hijack This log.

Also, please do the following:

Open HijackThis and click on "Config" and then on the "Misc Tools" button. If you're viewing HijackThis from the Main Menu then click on "Open the Misc Tools Section". Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. Copy and paste that list here please.

Hi ands thanks for reply.
I uninstalled netmeter and downloaded and ran Dr.Web.
It ran the first quick scan. It didn't give me the option to choose which drives to run but when i clicked the play button to run it scanned over 10,000 files so I think it was ok.
Anyway it didn't find any files so the save log button was greyed out.

Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove programs and remove:

Viewpoint Media Player

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

Please run Kaspersky online virus scan Kaspersky Online Scanner.

After the updates have downloaded, click on the "Scan Settings" button.
Choose the "Extended database" for the scan.
Under "Please select a target to scan", click "My Computer".
When the scan is finished, Save the results from the scan!

Note: You have to use Internet Explorer to do the online scan.

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from the SuperAntiSpyware and Kaspersky scans.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications (the fifth one in the list)..
  • Click the "Download" button to the right. A new page will open.
  • Select your platform and check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click Continue.
  • Click on the link under Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
  • Go to Start - Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

How are things now?

My laptop seems to be running ok now thanks.
I think I have become obsessed with looking at the process tab in task manager though and thinking I see suspicious things running even though I probably just never noticed them before. I have become very paraniod
Earlier I saw rundll.exe running (but only at 2%) and thought the problems were starting again.

So do you think I had a virus? or that the computer just had a little blip?

I just want to say thanks for all your time, I was going to get the hard drive wiped but read in another post someone suggesting that they may learn something by doing this instead, and I really think I have learned quite a bit so thankyou.

By the way I now have a very cluttered desktop, Shall i delete all the scanning programs I have downloaded? which would you suggest I keep.
Is Zonealarm, AVG and ad-aware enough?

:D

If you saw rundll.exe then there may be a problem . Are you sure that was the name and not rundll32.exe?

I have been checking task manager again and I haven't seen it running now.
I thought it was without the 32 but it dissapeared so was probably mistaken.

Thanks for all your help(y)

Click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders".
Click "Apply" then "OK".

Go to Start > Search - All Files and Folders and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Then search for rundll.exe and if you find it let me know the entire path please.

I have done that and it didn't find a rundll.exe.

It found 2 slrundll.exe with paths of local disk, I386, SP2.CAB i think as it didn't really give me a path i just had to open containing folder then go up a level to find where it was.

Once again, thank you, do you think I am clear now?
The computer still seems to be a little bit slow opening firefox or IE though, but maybe it is just me.
I will keep an eye on that task manager again.
By the way, Zone alarm is asking if I want to grant explorer.exe internet access.
Should I allow it or not? as I am a little unsure of this explorer.exe.
