defragment C weekly while away for 3 hours. when started defragmenting today came back to find defragmentation would not continue. window stating "there s a program telling defragmenting program to stop". also scandisk function which functions automatically daily has not scanned for 7 days. begins to scan and then stops and starts over. had Norton Systems installed when tried to uninstall could not complete uninstallation and have been without virus updates for 1 year. Does this sound like a virus or am I missing something?

Welcome to TSG azlatch. Why not try doing an online scan here:

    http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/

    Trend's housecall is quite good.

Restarts during scandisk and defrag are common problems, but usually are resolved by either end-tasking all programs except Explorer and systray or running them from safe mode.

To enter safe mode, press and hold the ctrl key as the computer reboots until you get the "startup menu". Then select safe mode from there.

Let us know what HouseCall finds and how you do.
