Okie Dokie. I have Win XP pro, with SP2. recently I got homesearchassistant, a perticularly crappy trojan. I followed some directions online to remove it, and an hour and a bunch of screwing around with the registry later, I rebooted my computer and voila, HSA was toast. So was IE...

Anytime I try to launch internet explorer, it just goes to a page that says:

    "Action canceled
Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. The page might be temporarily unavailable.
    "

With "No Page to display" in the title bar, regardless of the address i enter.

For a while i though the internet had exploded (j/k) untill I got a friend to send me firefox via email (outlook still worked somewhat). Firefox works fine (hence how I am writing this message). Its not anything to do with connectivity or bookmarks or anything, but i think i might have screwed up something in the registry, or got overzalous with deleting .dlls?

In addition, other programs got a bit screwed up too. Outlook still works for sending email, but the "Personal Folders" start page is blank and unresponsive (i think it is IE based?). In addition, any file sharing program I try to open (Kazaa Revolution... deleted and installed a bunch of times) will not start. I get the "kazaalite.kpp has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." message.

I didnt have any of these problems before I "fixed" my computer... sometimes the medicine is worse than the disease no? please help!

PS oh yeah, I disabled system restore to free up memory.. seemed like a good idea at the time...

PPS Dont have and probably can't get the Windows Disks (I'm on exchange in a foreign country)

File sharing is the root of your problems.

You can try this route and maybe it can be fixed, but dinking the registry is not a good idea

    SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
    AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
    SpyBot S&D 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
    definition updates
and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
    they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Do these and reboot before the next step.

Then get HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html, put
it in a permanent folder (C:\HJT) , run it , DO NOT fix anything, post the
    log here.

Happy Days, IE is fixed (Outlook as well) but Kazaa still wont launch...

    Following error message...

kazaalite.kpp has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

wierd thing is i tried to install other clients (imesh, morpheus, etc) but they all give a similar message before ever loading

If you want help, and you really need it, you will have to get rid of Kazza and all file sharing and P2P

Let me know and I'll help, otherwise you are on your own!

I don't see SpyBot - did you follow my directions
