I had a 2 second power outage today and since have not been able to boot my pc. I am given the "windows did not start successfully" screen and then I am prompted to choose safe mode, safe with networking,...ect. I have tried all options for restarting and get the same result with each. Once selecting I see the windows xp screen for about 1 second then it flashes blue and starts over. I am able to enter bios menus on the motherboard however. My system is home built MSI motherboard, 4 gb ram, and running xp. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Kirk

Hi Kirk, and welcome to TSG.

Do you have a bootable Windows XP installation disc that will let you do a repair installation?

You could use it to get into Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r

My brother will be getting me his disc sometime this afternoon. What steps should I take once I get the disc?

    1. Start your computer with the Windows startup disks, or with the Windows CD-ROM if your computer can start from the CD-ROM drive.Put the CD in and restart the PC.(you may have to change the boot order in Bios to the CD-Rom as first)
    2. When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to select the repair option.
    3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
    4. Type the administrator password when you are prompted to do so.
NOTE: If no administrator password exists, press ENTER.
    5. At the command prompt, on the drive where Windows is installed, type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER.
    6. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer.

If this procedure does not work, repeat it and use the fixboot command in step 5 instead of the chkdsk /r command.

The same thing is happening to me, although I don't know what caused it.
Will the repair option work with a windows upgrade disk?
    I don't have a full disk.
