power suuply

    160-Watt 4/2A STLS Power Supply R2
    this is my psu. i need a more wattage. someone told me to make sure the psu was a standard atx before i got anything, whats that? this is all i know about the psu. gateway support doesn't tell me anything. can i just get an antec power supply and put it in?

    you could try :)
    sometimes the proprietary OEMs (gateway, emachine, dell, etc) use odd sized components not readily available except through them

    you might have to 'mod' the case a little bit to fit a standard atx PSU in there
    - take out the PSU and take it along to your PC supply store to make sure the dimensions are the same, and the connection holes etc

    here's an emachine site - with some info on replacing PSU etc - but no gateway models listed (gateway bought EM a year ago)

    don't know why either one thinks an underpowered PSU is a deal for anyone :)
    planning on replacing the 250w PSU in mine soon - fortunately it's very close to atx size so it shouldn't be a problem (famous last words)

    i contacted gateway and they assured me a standard atx psu would fit in my case ok.
