Trying out the windows 10 emoji pack to see if it works. Well the smilies didn't work but the heart did. Lets try again. Looks like only certain symbols will work here. Trying again. Oh well only certain symbols will work. The one you see are only a few of the ones I tried.

It shows in my edit, but not in post, the vbb code for start/end quote..that's what I get with>>

just trying that 3rd button from the right for the first time (I count undo/redo as one button)on the top of post control panel...so kinda seems redundant...I mean compared to the way I'm used to.

But long as I've been here, and since there's no such thing as a stupid question...
I still feel like a newbie with the "new" (now standard) software on the board.

My stupid question is I see that many will post a snippet from a news article, and it'll be posted in an outlined box with a light blue background - and just include the text the poster has chosen.

    Example: HERE
    and HERE

Embarrassed to say I don't yet know how to do it...hey I don't mind being different, but sometimes I want to conform :D
Was going to PM one of you folks, but I figure the truth is out there and should be seen by all ;)

You can type the title of the article that you want to be the link to it then highlight that line of text and click on the first paper clip which turns it into a link then you can use the button you refer to (insert button) to insert quote tags (or do it manually like Tim said) for the section of the article you wish to quote.

    You're welcome.

You can also use URL tags for the title manually in the same manner as the quote tags.

Yeah that's what I used to do manually too, but the 'insert' link function (i.e. looks like a paperclip) works fine if you want to just refer to an outside article as " here ya go, just go look at the whole thing." No, really, just click on the blue underlined word :)

Karen's post seems complicated, but ekim68 and others can do it on a regular basis...(actually Tim, I thought you already knew all about that ;)
but this is the practice thread, so lemme give it a go...

Karen says to type the article title, uh, I just don't think Mike (the TSG member, not Mr Cermak ;)) or the others would trouble to type the title...nor would I...
    perhaps I'm being stubborn,

A high-ranking Kirtland Air Force Base officer with top security clearance who disappeared 35 years ago has been found in California.

The Air Force Office of Special Investigations said in a news release this week that William Howard Hughes, Jr., was apprehended at his home after a fraud investigation involving a fake identity he had been using.

Uh no worky for me that appears like the examples I linked to above

That's not the title you linked, it's actually the first paragraph of the article. You can copy and paste the title but then you have to go back and copy the URL.

If I quote a remark mentioned by anyone on TSG it does show up in the post visually as "the box" I mentioned... Like this:
Seems I simply can't replicate the "Examples" I linked to earlier, to include a snip from an outside site.

Please understand folks, this not a major issue, but tell me y'all only see underlined indications of links, but CG's post above IS in a "box" with a light blue background.

AND my previous post only had an obvious link, and the news that I copied also showed up as just plain text.
(well I did 'paste' the text as a link and a just "paste"

You are quite correct, I linked to URL only...the text posted was an underlined link to just that... and all that may entail... ;)

But Jeez, who likes to go back and copy stuff? :D

In the sample you were trying this is how the code should look:

[URL='https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/missing-air-force-officer-found-35-years-55789403']A high-ranking Kirtland Air Force Base officer with top security clearance who disappeared 35 years ago has been found in California.[/URL]

[quote]The Air Force Office of Special Investigations said in a news release this week that William Howard Hughes, Jr., was apprehended at his home after a fraud investigation involving a fake identity he had been using.[/quote]

    in order to get this:

A high-ranking Kirtland Air Force Base officer with top security clearance who disappeared 35 years ago has been found in California.

    Now I believe I get it ;)
    Seeing the code helped, thanks!
