Hi Bob and others,
Regarding the Presario 700 that won't boot:

I went to bootdisk.com and downloaded the XP quickboot diskette files. But even after putting these on a bootable floppy from XP - it is still FAT, not NTFS - it won't do anything with the files. I cannot see the drive. The instructions say to place them on a bootable floppy made on XP, but I do not see any difference.

I happen to have an XP Pro disk and wonder if I can use it to restart the system, and to restore it? I have the original license key on this machine.

I am also going to try to access the drive on a different PC with NTFS - I bought a hard drive adapter cable the other day, so it will plug into an IDE cable.

Any ideas? The license is for XP Home edition and I was wondering about buying a new upgrade version disk at Walmart for $99. It will have SP2 on it.

Any ideas? Can I recover the Home Edition drive from the XP Pro CD? I may have the original disks in the mail in about a week. but he really wants his machine to work.

Thanks!

Dude, do you mean the laptop? If you do, the only way to reboot the thing ifrom a boot disk is to use the quick restore cds. Something about the way they place thier drivers ensures that if you try to boot up from any other bootable cd, the systems just stalls halfway. I know, I have one too. Anyway, HP would be able to help you out, since they've taken over compaq, they should have all the boot cds with them.
