I thought the age of the pop-up ad was dead!

I recently purchased a new HP Pavilion (don't know model #, it can convert to a tablet), running Widows 10. I purchased Microsoft Office.

Without me knowingly doing anything, I'm suddenly getting pop-ups! When I load a site, a screen loads over it. Either it says "Congratulations! You have been selected..." or there will be a page of sponsored listings. Also, certain words in EVERY page of text I read are hyperlinked: blue, with two underlines.

I've been told not to buy Norton. What options do I have to prevent these annoying ads? I thought the age of the pop-up ad was dead!

Your browser should have a pop up blocker.
With IE go to Tools , Pop Up blocker and turn it on.

    The following is from http://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/enable-or-disable-block-pop-ups-in-microsoft-edge.html
Enable or Disable Block Pop-ups in Microsoft Edge -
Steps to enable or disable Block pop-ups in Microsoft Edge: Step 1: Tap the Microsoft Edge icon on the taskbar. Step 2: Click the upper-right More actions button, and choose Settings. Step 3: Select View advanced settings. Step 4: Turn off or on Block pop-ups in advanced settings.

My problem is with Chrome. I don't use Edge. My company's intranet doesn't work well with Edge. I am getting blue highlighted "sponsored" links in all of my text as well. I have "popups" turned off in Chrome.

Well, I do not use Chrome, but do use IE 11 most of the time and Edge few times.
I get no pop ups and it does every thing that I want and need.
With Chrome, I have had two many issues and have see more issues here and at other boards.

I uninstalled one problem program; bought & installed both McAfee & Hitman. I've run the programs and rebooted. I am STILL having the pop-ups, surveys, system "hesitation" and blue highlighted type on every site. I downloaded the system info link in the instructions post before this forum, but I don't know how to attach it to this message. Help!
