i have kinda old beater hp laserjet 6L, but works fine for what is needed of it and is currently installed on an xp home machine. am replacing that box with an xp pro machine, but get error on install either with new hardware found or install new printer.
err msg not helpful and nothing in the event viewer
'printer driver was not installed, operation could not be completed'
the install finish shows a path leading to windows/system32/spool/drivers..../30603552
there is nothing like that in the ......drivers path
i copied the hp folder in that path on the xp home machine but no help there.

supposedly the window supplied driver is the only one that will work and others i downloaded are not recognized.

since it can install on xp home there should be some way for it work on xp???????????

There is separate Printer driver for driver for Xp pro and XP Home edition. go to hp site and download driver for xp pro windows.

Try redirecting the path to windows/system32 . If that doesn't work let us know what file it is looking for specifically and maybe I can be of more help.

    thanks for the replies
i cannot find an xp printer driver on hp, they indicate they have driver downloads for xp, they don't distinguish between pro and home, but it doesn't matter since there is no xp driver there anyway, or at least that i can find, this is where the search for drivers ends on hp

the printer install indicates the path it is using to install the driver is literally
it has the .... there because the path is so long, on my machine there is nothing there that eventually ends up with the 30603552,
that is a file with no extension? i've searched the i386 from the install cd and nothing comes up for 30603552

i've downloaded a couple driver packages from driverguide etc, they have .inf's that the printer installer won't acknowledge when pointing right at them, it appears they are drivers for nt4.0
