Printer slow to respond

I posted this under Business Forum, but was told that it was a Window issue. So, here goes.
I have an HP Deskjet 3050a printer on HP Envy Laptop. I use Jetec compatible ink.
For some time now I have had some problems with my printer. Sometimes it responds immediately. Other times it takes up to 5 minutes to respond. It happens on wireless or on the cable. Sometimes I have to empty the print queue and start again and that often does it. Should I be getting a new printer, or is there anything I can do to improve the situation? Allan
