I am using a back up laptop and trying to get my printer to be recognized. I go to control panel and click on *add printer* and received pop up box stating *windows can't open add printer. Local print spool service is not running. Please restart the spool or restart the machine. I restarted the machine but no effect.

What is the make/model of laptop/Pc you're wanting to install printer on? What is make/model of said printer?

AFAIK, you have to install the printer manually to said computer. That means using the provided software and usb cable. I don't know of any other way.

NOTE: That being said, if you have a home network setup and the printer is installed and working on the primary PC.....then you can use said method as you stated to add a printer. AFAIK that only works in a network environment.

You provided no information about your laptop or your printer.

Have you installed the software driver package(if one exists) for your printer?

I am using a Dell Latitude 3340 with windows 7. My main laptop in fir repair and I don't have any software driver to install. My main computer just looked for the printer name and connected as far as I know. My printer is shown in the control panel.

You say you're temporarily using a Dell Latitude 3340 laptop which is running Windows 7.

However, you still haven't provided a description of the printer, so we still don't know if a software driver package exists for it.

Canon PIXMA MX922 Printer (support site)

    Click "Drivers & Downloads".
Select "Windows 7" or "Windows 7 (x64)" for the operating system, depending on whether that Dell laptop is running Windows 7 32-bit or Windows 7 64-bit.
Make sure to select the "Drivers" column.
The top-most entry dated 01/29/16 is the most current driver.
    Click "Select", then click "Download".
Select a location in that laptop to download and save that driver file.
After that's done, close all open browser windows.
Double-click that saved driver file to start the install process, then follow the directions.

I did that and got the *Local print spool service is not running. * message again. I don't understand. My new computer just connected without issue when I had it.

You can try to start the Print Spooler service manually.
In the "search window" type the following (Without quotation marks)
    "Services.msc"

Then find the Print Spooler and try to start it manually. If it fails give us the exact error message. If it does start, then set the startup type to Automatic.

You may want to download the driver from here.
If it is detected in your computer you can use the fax/scan feature in your computer to see if that may help you.

It starts saying *windows is attempting to start the following services on local computer* then quits.

Well, I went again to control panel and clicked on the printer icon and now I can print. Not sure what I did but thanks to both of you for your help.

Maybe your printer was not set as the "default" printer. Glad to hear you solved your problem.
