I have a Compaq IJ700 printer that came with my Compaq Presario 5150 computer, running windows 98. It was working fine and then suddenly it will not print anymore. I tried unhooking all cables and hooking them back up and uninstalling and reinstalling printer, but nothing helps. The Compaq control program comes up like it is going to print, but nothing happens, then a few minutes later, I get a error message saying my printer timed out. I have tried using the printer troubleshoooter, but no help. Can anyone help?

Does the printer make any noise when it is switched on? Can you test the printer on another computer? If you have not installed any software or hardware and the printer just quit, I would suspect the printer itself. One other thought do a complete virus scan with an up to date virus program.

Can you do a test print from the printer? Also, just a shot in the dark have you checked the ink levels?

I just tried to print and my control program locked up so I couldn't get in to try to print the test page. So I tried to bring up the control program by selecting print from the file menu, I received an error"Spool32" Cartridge is pretty new, few weeks old. I will have to get a virus check program, I think mine is too old, and try that.

Most printers have a way to print a test page without using the software. You normally have the computer shut down and the printer powered. You hold down a couple of buttons on the printer – it varies according to who made your printer. Compaq rebadges other maker’s printers.

If it will print a test page you might just have to be more thorough with the uninstall: Shut down, unplug the printer and boot (no need to shut down if it is USB – just unplug it). Uninstall the software. Remove the printer from the printers folder – Start>Settings>Printers. Look for multiple entries for your printer in the printer folder and get them all. Shut down, plug in the printer and boot. Install the printer exactly by the instructions at the new hardware found prompt. If it is HP based you would cancel out of the new hardware box and install like normal software if it is hooked up parallel, and install like a normal driver at the box for USB.

You might also want to look for a driver update for the printer on the Compaq site.
