I have the exact same problem

[Hello, I have a Dell XPS and the fingerprint reader software allows me to encrypt archives. One an archive is encrypted I can open and view it by clicking on it. Today I accidentally set the file type (uea) to be opened with notepad. . . . . . . .]

In may case I just want to restore the archive file the (.uea) to it's normal prog association. I can't find the program for it. The file properties for .uea show the program to be 'psql file safe'.

In general, there seems to be no 'undo' feature after doing 'open-file-with'. The 'always use this program' check box comes up checked by default - that seems to make the change permanent unless you invoke the 'open-file-with' function again and know where to find the original program.

My computer is Dell XPS 1530 running Vista Ultimate
    Any advice appreciated.

Thank you for your quick response. I had got round the problem by invoking System Recovery. However your note prompted me to investigate the whole file association thing.

As you advised I looked for something like a 'Protector suite'. This led me to Dell /Fingrprint Reader folder and I found a program with the same icon as was on my .uea files. When I tried this the system responded with 'can't find 'file safe'. I also noticed that my now restored .uea file does not have an arrow on the 'Open with' button that normally brings up the program it is set to plus the next recommended ones to try. Properties of the .uae file show file-opens-with 'PSQL File Safe'. I can't find this particular name anywhere in Program files. I'm now thinking the encryption sub-system is launched by some obscure file that calls in more than one program

If it's any help to anyone my advice would now be :-

    1. If doing file 'open-with' watch out for the check box that asks 'Do you want to use this prog to open all files of this type'. In my Vista laptop it is checked by default. (On my XP desktop machine, it is not.)

    2. When doing file, right-click 'open-file-with' or Properties/opens-with/change, there seems to be no way back to the previous setting except to find the program and re-make it. I suspect the file-program associations are held in the Registry. The only safe way I know of reverting the Registry is to invoke 'System Restore'.
