I had to disconnect while my laptop was updating the security centre so that someone could use the phone (I was using a dialup connection). When I went back on, I did the update process again, but I was also forced me to reload the program. When I completed that process, I found I was unable to raise any web pages.

Now I am back home again, with my wireless connected via a high speed connection. The wireless connection seems to be working OK, indicating a connection speed of 11Mbps/sec. but I still couldn't get on the 'net.

I disabled the virus checker, firewall and privacy options. Still didn't work. Does anyone have suggestions on what I need to do to get my laptop to go on the web again?

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

Well, to anyone who is interested: I am on the 'net again, and with my laptop even! I don't know what happened, but when I tried again, for the umpteenth time, the web came up!

If anyone knows what my problem was, I would appreciate hearing from you. I was unable to get onto the internet for about a week while I was travelling. So I don't want that to happen again! Or rather, if it does happen again, I would like to know how to solve the problem.

What windows version are you running? If it's one you can do a restore on, try to restore from a day before the problem started.

I am using XP Pro, and it does indeed have system restore, according to the manual. Listed in the manual's index under 'system restore' rather than 'restore', which was my first thought as a search term, but by browsing the table of contents I finally found it.

Thank you for an excellent suggestion, LDTate.

All best to you and thank you for volunteering your time on this great service!

    Hello,

I have the same problem as Robert described - my network connections seem to be all up to speed but i cannot use the internet ... Usually i just get the message

    "server not found"

but sometimes i get what _almost_ looks like a normal microsoft messagebox telling me that

"the search did not find a match" or suchlike.

There have been occations when i for the umphteenth time try accessing the same page, i actually manage it and then the whole internet works as perfectly as ever before, but these times are getting more and more scarce. Now, internet typically works five minutes after startup in one out of twenty startups...

I've had the problem a couple of weeks now and hence unfortunately think that the "restore-operation" hinted of above is lost in the swirls of time..

    Help would be most appreciated!

And, for all that are interested to know; as I am a total newbie to this forum, I am not able to access my private messages ... :(

Edit: well, and that was valid until this my second post ... :)

Please start your own thread for this matter. Because yours is the last name posted, and not the name of the thread starter, nobody can tell from the main page that your are having a problem. When you post, please include this....

    Please go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155

Please note: When you download HijackThis put it in its own permanent folder like My Documents for example. DO NOT download to a temp folder or the desktop.

Launch program and click on the SCAN button. After scan click on “ Save Log “. It should save to Notepad.

Click on Edit, then Select All. Then click Edit again then Copy. Then paste log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it shows will be harmless / needed stuff. Wait for an expert to review it and advise you.
