Problem loading 2nd copy of Microsoft Office

    We recently purchased 'Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003'. There is a large blurb on the outside of the package: 'Licenced for Noncommercial Use on up to 3 home PCs', so we thought 'hey, three for the price of one, good deal!' Well, not so.

    We bought it and loaded it on my daughter's laptop without a problem. But when I tried to load it into my laptop, the CD drive hums and buzzes a while and then everything stops. When I go to the CD drive on 'My Computer' it won't even acknowledge that there is a disc in the drive.

    I just spent two hours trying to get help from MS Corp through accessing their web site at www.support.microsoft.com. But no luck there: apparently I need the product ID (not the key, that is something different I believe) and I can't immediately get that because it is only available from the installed product (my daughter is now gone to university, and phone not yet installed) Well, I will keep trying, but I don't know if we will ever get the second and third copies of this program installed on our other computers.

    I am posting this not for help: I know I am beyond that at this stage. Just to remind all that the [email protected]#$ Microsoft products are the biggest pain! If they tell you you can load more than one copy of their product, well, make sure the retailer takes returns in case it doesn't pan out this way. If you need help, you have to jump through more hoops than you can count before you can get it if you get it at all (I don't think I have ever been successful in actually communicating with a human being in the MS Organization!) I have used Corel and Wordperfect products for years without any major problem. But every time I get involved with a [email protected]#$ MS Corp. product I wind up with a big headache!

    Anyone with this problem, I wish them luck. They'll need that as a minimum.

    Thanks to all who read this rant. Now I feel a lot better!

    The CD cannot tell if you have previously installed it or not, Robert. This is obviously more of a problem with your CD drive/driver than with the CD in it.

    But I *am* glad that you feel better!!

    Turned out you are correct, Dreamboat - I checked the drive and found I couldn't save anything to it. Called Dell: the technician asked me to remove and then put the drive back in. Did this several times but the drive still wouldn't respond. So Dell is sending me a replacement drive.
