Problem moving large file with 'cut' & 'paste'

Life is all about making mistakes .............
Instead of copying data and then deleting from source. I have been in the habit of cut & pasting. Problem occured with a directory of 150 meg. 50% was pasted and 50% disappeared down a black hole. ........................

Does anybody know where this black hole is? Or has the data gone to never never land?

I believe the cut function creates a cache file that collapses after the next copy,cut initiation. Unfortunately I believe the remainder went to cyber heaven. I to like cut and paste but try to limit its use to small files.
