I have two XP machines (desktop and laptop). I can't get them to see each other via a home network using a crossover cable. I've set them to separate IP addresses ( & When I ping each of them I typically get a 50% failure rate.

Check the cable, make sure it is not running over any high voltage lines or near floresent lights.

I'll make a recommendation. Buy a $10-15 hub and forget the crossover cable. I've answered this question a number of times, and frequently crossover cables are problematic. One major issue is grounding between the two machines, but there are other issues as well. In all the cases, putting a cheap hub in the network solved the problem.
