It has been a long time since I asked Tech Support to help clean up conflicting programs and possible virus problems. I am having difficulty shutting down the PC recently. I've had to unplug pc from the wall outlet several times. Attached is the hijack file. Please advise.

Also, while waiting for Tech Support Guys to respond, I ran Spybot. It detected one item to fix and I pressed "fix problem". Spybot launched XP Restore. I recall that it does take a few minutes for this to complete. But I stopped it after 15 minutes. I saw no blinking lights on the PC indicating that anything was happening. How long should it take to complete an XP restore ?

OK so I have two problems.

    1. when shutting down I get the following messages a) NVDIA TWIN VIEW (END NOW) ; b) wauclt.exe (End Now)

    2. I cannot run Spybot as it is having problems create a Restore

Anything that you see in the HiJack log that should be fixed ? And why do you suppose that Spybot can't create a Restore ?

OK. I went to the website and researched about 15 of the items in StartUp. I have unchecked the following : nvcpl ; hkcmd ; nwiz ; sm1BG ; spamsubtract ; ontouch ~2 ; ppwebcap ; xpcspy ; and rundll32.

The problem is now - how do I save this. I keep going in circles. I hit the apply button and the message comes back that I have to restart . So I say OK. But after rebooting, I am told that I am in diagnostics mode and I must go and change to Normal startup. But as soon as I do that, all of the above items have check marks next to them, meaining that they are still going to be running.

Also, I could not find a bunch of the start up items on that website .
    What is hpztsb08
    what is spywareguar
    what is event reminder

    Thanks

I use "EASY CLEANER" to keep my START-UP and REGISTRY under control. Very user friendly FREE program. Read about and, if you want to, download from here.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download414.html
Here's a pic of my START UP....

As you can see...It's not neccassary to have a whole lot on start up.

    jpar111,

I downloaded easycleaner and removed a bunch of startup items. Shutting down the PC seems to go more smoothly. There are still a lot of start up items that I do not know what to do with, like rundll32. Attached is the latest log. Do you see any things that should be fixed or removed ?

Using easy cleaner, I ran the registry portion. What is it that I should be looking to remove. There are 195 invalid items.

    Thanks

The first thing I thought of when looking at that scanlog is -- man he sure has a lot of things running there. It still could be a resource issue -- if memory is vastly depleted at shutdown time, so before shutting down, do this:

    COMMIT CHARGE

Do ctrl-alt-del to open up the task manager. Select the "performance" tab. Let me know what you see under:

    Physical Memory

Total: this is your total installed ram -- "physical" memory
Available: this is the amt of real "physical" memory presently uncommitted

    Commit Charge

Total: this is the combination of total physical and virtual memory currently in use
Limit: this is the total physical and virtual memory available
Peak: this is the most you have had in use in this session
    ======================

Next, run the event viewer (run: eventvwr.msc) and look at the Applications log.

Look for errors 1517 and 1524, if you have those, install this:

    Under physical memory - total = 458096 ; available = 136060

    Under Commit : total = 373080 ; limit = 1083808 ; peak = 399500

Under event viewer, there were indeed lot of 12517''s So I installed UPHClean-Setup. I ran it and it created the uphclean.exe. But it does not run. A black screen (like a dos screen) appeared briefly and then closed down. It did nothing while open, and now it will not reopen. The 1517's are still there.

It doesn't look like memory resources are a problem.

By the way NEVER shutdown by unplugging. Instead press and hold down the power button on the pc for 5 to 8 seconds to invoke a BIOS level shutdown.

Did you look at the event viewer?

You may also need to do "clean boot" troubleshooting >

First, restart in Safe Mode (tap the f8 key promptly on startup and choose the Safe Mode option from the boot menu).

    In Safe Mode –

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310353

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

    Rollin Rog,

By the way, the shut down process is working properly due to one or more of the suggestions that were provided by Tech Guys. I would like to continue to do housecleaning that you have suggested in your last two posts.

I am still working on your previous posting regarding event viewer. I wrote that I found lots of 1517's and that I installed uphclean.exe, but it does not work. Perhaps I selected the wrong executable. That website was not easy to follow along. I thought I selected the .exe that matched my Windows XP. Anyway, the 1517's are numerous and still exist. Any suggestions.
