Hi bboop,welcome to TSG.

Did this just start happening? What operating system are you running?

That area of the taskbar is called the System Tray, or, more affectionately - Systray - for short.
How many icons do you have in your Systray under normal circumstances?
Are there any duplicate items?

Something's causing you to freeze at bootup, although not necessarily one of the items in your Systray.
Then again...

Go to Start > Run, type in the word msconfig, and click Ok.
On the General tab, choose Selective startup.
On the Startup tab, uncheck any items listed there that aren't crucial to launch at startup.
If you aren't certain which items to uncheck, there is a comprehensive list here, that will explain each individual entry: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm
When finished, click Ok, and reboot.

The site listed above says you can't disable MSN Messenger, (msmmsge.exe), through the Startup tab of your System Configuration Utility.
They say you must do so through the registry.

If your problem persists, and you would like to try disabling MSN Messenger from launching at startup, someone else here can help you do this through the registry, or you might like to try this little program, available from CNet: MS Messenger Startup Fix 1.00
