Actually Firmware may be the answer. DVD compatibilty is a big problem. I have a LG 4040B and it will only write to Mitsumi 4X DVD's at 2X and had to update the firmware to use Memorex discs. The lesson is not all media works in all drives.

You can download the firmware from here: http://www.lge.com/support/software_gcsc.jsp

Somtimes it solves problems with media not listed as well as not all media can be tested. Or you can try different CD's.
Ya I actually upgraded the firmware and its still the same

The IDE cable should not matter for a DVD drive but the 80 wire is much finer and if you count the wires in the cable there'll be 80. Note that the end connector will still have 40 pins.

Have you tried another brand of CD's?

Well I have figured it out. I had a friend bring over a Ritek CDr and it showed up as 40X. So whats really puzzling is that the mitsumi CDrs I'm using are rated up to 48X and they burned at 40 in my older Lite-On CD Writer but in this LG DVD Writer they will olny burn at 8X. So my problem is fixed I guess but I'm still wondering why this media only shows up at 8X when it was 40X in other writers.

Glad to see your problem is no longer a problem.

I asked about the cable wire count because I was told once the 80 wire cable was less susceptible to signal noise, hence a faster write speed without re-retrieving data due to errors. I was just trying every angle I could think of. Funny a simple thing like changing media solves your problem:D

Thx for all the help. Still weird that the media burned at 40X on my other cd writer.

Like I said I have Mitsumi DVD's that only burn at 2X when they should burn at 4X. Its a compatibility issue that many people experience, sometimes there's a firmware update to resolve some issues and sometimes there isn't. Be aware that all media is not made the same.
