Problem with Netgear VMDG480 Router and Vista Wireless Connection

recently joined Virgin Media with the complete package. The router they gave me is a Netgear VMDG480 Router with wireless connection. However, one of the laptops will not connect to the Internet. It fails to pick up the DNS even though the laptop can see the router and makes a connection. However, on making a connection it does not pick up a DNS.

This is odd because when connected wired it works a treat.

Here is the result from running ipconfig on the wireless adapter:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: [Blank]
Nothing for DCHP
IPv4 Address: 192.168.0.6
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Nothing for DCHP Server
Nothing for DNS Servers

This particular laptop runs Vista, and the other laptop that does work wirelessly uses XP Professional.

Does anyone have the answer to this problem?

Thanks

can we see the following information
also try a tcp/ip reset - see below

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

If you receive the message
The requested operation requires elevation.
The please open the command prompt as administrator - as requested above
Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Post back the results here - we need to know these commands worked correctly
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

well the Wireless connection IP looks correct

the TCP/IP reset did not work- needed admin account or to be run as admin,
It would be worth trying in safe mode with networking
as the PC starts - keep tapping F8 a menu will appear choose
safe mode with networking
try the tcp/ip reset again

make sure you run as admin
Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.
disconnect the cable - as that will take preference over wireless

try turning the router OFF and the PC off - leave off for 30sec or more and then turn the router back on , then once the router and lights are all settled turn on PC

you may also like to log into the router and remove/disable/switch off the wireless security and see if it will connect with an open wireless security

Hi

I am at work at the moment, and so I cannot check running it in safe mode.

The router is a Virgin Media Superhub, but this is just a badge because it is a Netgear VMDG480 a router. There are 3 other devices connected to it:

1) My main computer running wired through one of the ports using XP Pro 64 bit - no problem
2) A network drive running wired through one of the ports - no problem
3) My internet enabled Sony Bravia TV running wired through one of the ports - no problem

The IP address for wireless and DNS look all OK

we are seeing an issue here with a different wireless adapter on vista that have the same symptoms - connecting to router but not able to get internet on WPA(2) - BUT thats a Atheros AR5007EG and you have a Atheros AR5006EG

remove the wireless profiles and then reconnect and re-enter the security code. - see if that now allows connection

To change the security code - information is on the link here,
http://help.virginmedia.com/system/...TYPE=Cable&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=337896
BUT that also shows you how to disable the security -
MAKE A NOTE of the current settigns and then - I would disable and see if you can now connect with wireless - if that works - put the same security settings back on and see if that has resolved - if not - change to WEP security and see if that works OK

If you have the Vigin Media manager on the PC - you can change from that application - see how here
http://help.virginmedia.com/system/...TYPE=Cable&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=245800

Issues we are seeing with the Atheros AR5007EG

Atheros AR5007EG & AR5007
We have recently been seeing a whole lot of problems with that adapter over the last couple months, especially with WPA(2) encryption and windows Vista.

The adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK. - Post back here if that does work or not.

In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver." That apparently has worked for some posters. If not, download and install the latest wireless driver from your laptop manufacturer's web site support section.

You can post the Make and EXACT model of PC here, along with the windows version you have and we can find the driver and post a link here.

On one occasion re-setting the router back to factory default and re-configuring the router settings has resolved the issue

Assuming that also does not work all I can suggest is to use wireless security of WEP or to get an external USB wireless card.
You might also bug your laptop's tech support about the problem--maybe people can put pressure on Atheros to find a fix.

Although doesn't obviously solve the problem of why its not picking up the dns but have you tried manually settings static IP with DNS settings on the wireless connection?

does it work that way instead of it trying to do it automatically?

I have already tried the other day of deleting the wireless connection and reconnecting, but it made no different. The logs I gave you were when the laptop was connected wired to one of the ports. Hence why you were seeing a DNS! Unfortunately, Virgin Media gave me no way of logging into the router to make any changes to the settings. Can someone explain how I can do this? Please also bear in mind that any changes I make here may affect the other laptop which is a HP one running XP Pro that can connect wirelessly!

disconnect the cable and then as posted remove the wireless profiles

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wireless Profiles
http://mgmcc.forumotion.net/networking-tutorials-f17/removing-an-existing-wireless-profile-t109.htm
- Vista/Windows7:
http://www.tp-link.com/support/showfaq.asp?id=214
- delete the wireless profiles
Start> control Panel> classic view> network and sharing center> manage wireless networks

Delete the profiles
you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to - so make sure you know the correct password , and not using an incorrect password at all
--
do another ipconfig /all - without the cable connected and then you can save in notepad - reconnect the cable to post the results here

To log into the router , I posted some links on my last post on how to log into the router and also how to change the wireless setting, and yes it will effect the HP connecting, as your changing the settings - but it should still connect

No I haven't tried this.

But I have a few questions:
1) How do I carry this out because Virgin Media haven't given me anything?
2) If do this, how do ensure that my network drive, my other laptop, my TV and my main computer can still connect to the internet as well accessing my network drive?

Virgin Media should have provided a pack which included a CD - not that you need the CD

once you take the security off the wireless all other devices will still re-connect but with no security
then when you re-enable the security with the same password and setup then , if you have saved the wireless information , the devices should just reconnect - otherwise you would reconnect them as you did when you first started

This is the point, Virgin Media haven't given a support CD.
yes i saw that in an earlier post - but as i say you do not need a CD to configure a router

Can you explain how in both XP and Vista I can turn off the wireless security?
you just need to use a browser like internet explorer , some routers do not like firefox / chrome etc
So no real difference between XP and Vista
As its just an internet browser program thats needed

The link I provided before details how to log in and change the wireless security - for the The Virgin Media Hub
