Problem with removable storage devices

So I have this weird problem with my PC where any sort of removable storage or music device I connect to my PC through any USB port, shows up saying that it needs to be reformatted and then if I try to reformat it it says that it cant do it.

I have tried this with 2 flash drives that work on other computers and an Ipod that is perfectly fine. It says that the Ipod is corrupt or something and wont work on Windows.

Obviously there is something wrong with my PC, but I'm not sure where the problem is coming from. I already have a USB mouse and a USB cord for my keyboard that I leave plugged in permanently and they dont seem to be effected. It seems like anything that is showing up on my PC as a storage device or drive, automatically needs to be reformatted but I cant actually do it.

This is a real problem, I need to be able to move files on a flash drive for school and its currently not possible. thank you in advance for any advice.
