Recently, my computer has been having this problem, whereby it would restart if i left it running overnight. It does not restart when i am using it, but if i were to leave it idle for a significant period then it would restart. So every morning it would restart with a message that "windows has recovered from a serious error" or something to that effect and ask me to send an error report.

Initially thinking it may be a virus or malware, i scanned through my comp with Adaware, Spybot and my antivirus program but found nothing. When i sent an error report back to Microsoft, it would direct me to this message:

    "An Update Is Available

Thank you for submitting an error report. The error was likely caused by:

    AntiVir (AVGNTDD.SYS)

AntiVir (AVGNTDD.SYS) was created by H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH. H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH has updates for AntiVir (AVGNTDD.SYS) that may correct the problem you reported. To learn more about the updates, see the H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH website.

    http://www.hbedv.com/download/download.htm

If the problem persists, please contact H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH and alert them of the problem."

Now AntiVir was the antivirus software that i used, and i had been using it for some time w/o any problems so i was surprised by this. But since i had been frustrated by this problem, i decided to uninstall this program and instead replace it with AVG by Grisoft.

Having done this, the problem did not go away. When i sent the error report again after finding my comp restarted in the morning, i got a new message:

"Error Caused by a Device Driver

Thank you for submitting an error report. Unfortunately, we cannot provide you with specific information about how to resolve this problem at this time. The information that you and other users submit will be used to investigate this problem.

    Analysis

A device driver installed on your system caused the problem, but we cannot determine the precise cause.

    Getting Help

Depending on which situation is applicable to you, do one of the following:

If this problem occurred after you installed a new hardware device on your system, the problem might be caused by the driver for the device. If you know the manufacturer of the device, contact the manufacturer's product support service for assistance.
Some software, such as firewall and anti-virus software, also installs drivers. If this problem occurred after you installed new software, the software might have installed a driver that caused the problem. If you know the manufacturer of the software, contact the manufacturer's product support service for assistance.
If you don't know the driver's manufacturer and need help diagnosing and resolving this problem, contact your computer manufacturer's product support service.
Updated drivers might be available on the Microsoft Windows Update Web site. At Windows Update, you can have your computer scanned and, if there are updated drivers available, Windows Update will offer a selection of drivers that you might be able to use. To learn more about updated drivers that might be available, visit Microsoft Windows Update.
For information about Microsoft support options, visit Microsoft Product Support Services.
You can track this error report by clicking the Track this error report link. If you choose to track your error report, you will be notified of resolutions to this problem as they are identified."

Now the symptoms of my problems were still the same, yet after uninstalling Antivir, a different cause was mentioned. After uninstalling Antivir, the only new program had installed was AVG, so i was wondering if that was the cause since the report noted that "Some software, such as firewall and anti-virus software, also installs drivers."

However, i am unsure what device drivers are causing the problems, if it is caused by them in the first place. Also i am enclosing a HJT log for reference, though now i doubt it is due to a virus now:

Please give me advice if you spot a problem with my log, or if you know how to deal with my problem. I have no idea what device driver is causing the problem (assuming it is caused by a device driver, that is), and how to remedy the situation. Thanks.

I see you have two virus scanners running. There is a good chance they are conflicting with one another.

Actually, Antivir, the antivirus i had previously used had coexsisted peacefully with Norton Antivirus for a long time, while this problem was a more recent development. I have since substituted Antivir with AVG, and will try disabling one of them to see if it resolves the problem.

I have tried disabling one of the antivirus programs but it has failed to rectify the problem. Also i found that, if i tried My computer>Properites>Advanced Tab> Startup & Recovery settings> and chose not the tick the automatically restart box under system failure, when the error occurs, the screen would just blank out and not respond, forcing me to manually restart.

When i send an error report, its the same device error msg i get: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/Response.asp?SID=77

Attached is also my latest HJT log for reference:

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinServices] C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinServices.exe

    Restart to safe mode.

How to start your computer in safe mode

First in safe mode click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Now find and delete:

    The C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinServices.exe file

Also look for and delete these files if present in the System32 folder:

    nav32_loader.exe
    tcpsvc32.exe

    See here for more info:

    http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32yahal.html

Also I highly recommend that you go to Windows update and install all "Critical Updates and Service Packs". This will patch numerous security holes in IE and Windows.

By not ticking "automatically restart" box it will allow you to see any error message,if any, when it crashes.

Thanks for the help guys. flrman1, i did as u suggested, and after restarting in safe mode, i was unable to find C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinServices.exe . Perhaps it was already deleted by HJT. Likewise there was no nav32_loader.exe or tcpsvc32.exe, but there was a file called tcpsvcs.exe. Is is malicious? I have also updated up til the latest sevice packs.

Anyway here's the latest HJT log:

tcpsvcs.exe is a legitimate Windows file. The log looks fine.

Go here and do an online virus scan:

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location so you can delete it yourself.

The problem has failed to resolve inspite of what i did. My computer continues to restart with the same online crash anaylsis by microsoft:

    http://oca.microsoft.com/en/Response.asp?SID=77

In addition the "How to Troubleshoot Hardware and Software Driver Problems in Windows XP' page, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=322205 describes symptoms of hardware problems consistant with what i am facing.

    "SYMPTOMS
After you install a new hardware device or new software, your computer may start to restart spontaneously, or you may receive error messages on a blue screen.
    CAUSE
This behavior is typically caused by a device driver that is not correct for the version of Windows on which you installed it. Or, the device driver may have been poorly written, which can cause Windows to stop working correctly. "

Unfortunately i don't know which device driver, if it is the root of the problem, is causing the malfunction.

In addition, i ran the trendmicro online virus scan, and it found a malware .BKDR_IRCFLOOD.X in my computer. It was on auto clean so i thought that the problem was fixed but when i ran it a second time, it found the same malware again on my computer. It was as if it kept on respawing. could this bec related the the problems i am facing?

Finally, a copy of my latest HJT log:

There is no sign of anything in your log.

Did you copt the name of the file the scan said was infected and try to delete it yourself?

What was the exact file name and file path?

    Fix this one:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe
