Just formated the hard drive and started installing updates to windows. This computer was bought new from dell and the message from the windows update center was the core(kernel) is not a microsoft product and the installalation disc is from dell and has been installed other times and service pack 3 will not install.
Why not and what can I do?

That is not an error I have seen before on a clean install. My first thought is that the hard drive or memory is at fault which has corrupted the installation. Run the following diagnostics to test the RAM and hard drive.
