Hi, I'm tearing my hair out trying to get my old Lexmark X1150 to work with Windows 7. I can install the relevant driver (Lexmark say to use the one for Vista), get all the way through the installation process and thing seem fine. If I then unplug the printer from my machine then a further wizard appears, where I am to select which cartridges are installed and then try printing a test page, which does nothing.
If I click next, more components are installed, until finally I get to the point where it prepares my printer "for first use". After this I can get a message telling me it's searching for relevant software or something like that, at which point it hangs and subsequently crashes.

If I try to print anything at this stage, or any previous one, the computer detects the printer, but sending something to print does nothing, and I can't cancel the print job either, unless I unplug the printer, at which point I get an "error communicating with printer" message.

Here's my system specs: (interestingly the SystemInfo app tells me my antivirus is AVG, even though I switched to Avast a while ago)

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium , Service Pack 1, 64 bit
    Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
    Processor Count: 2
    RAM: 3066 Mb
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570, 512 Mb
    Hard Drives: C: Total - 290205 MB, Free - 21754 MB;
    Motherboard: Dell Inc., 0C234M, A08, .523LXK1.CN486439BQ1257.
    Antivirus: Avast! Free

    Thanks for any help

Thanks, but that's the driver I've been trying to use- to no avail.

    -------------------
This tutorial will explain how to delete Printer drivers from windows 7/Vista
    1. Delete the printer from control panel -> printers
    2. Open Services.msc and stop and start the Print Spooler service
    3. Open Print Management(Open command prompt, type in printmanagement.msc or type print management in to the start menu search box)
    4. In Custom Filters -> All Drivers right click the printer driver you want to remove and select Remove Driver Package
    5. Install new printer driver.

I can't get print management to open. If I try it via command prompt, I get the message "unable to initialize device PRN", and if I try it through the search bar, clicking on it opens the window for a second before it disappears again.

I think this maybe a problem on Home as it maynot have printmanagement
    no printmanagement on Home

    http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware...er-management-missing-win-7-home-premium.html

    see if this helps
    remove printer drivers
    Open Printers and Faxes.
On the File menu, click Server Properties, and then click the Drivers tab.
In the Installed printer drivers list, click the driver you want to remove, click Remove, and then click Yes to confirm.

    Note
To open Printers and Faxes, click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.

I have done everything you said; driver uninstallation was successful. I have since reinstalled the driver package, gotten to the exactly the same stage as before, "preparing All-In-One Center For First Use" and once again it searches for applications for maybe 30 seconds, then it hangs and crashes if clicked on.
The problem seems to be with Lexmark All-In-One Center itself, which the printer depends on, as if I try and open the program, the same thing happens. Sending anything to print still does nothing at this point.

    Try going here
Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers
be sure your printer is checked as default printer. Instead of Journal or XPS Document Writer.

    Goddamn...well thanks anyway.

Oh and yes, it is the default printer.
Another thing: my Windows says "Test Mode Build 7601" in the bottom right hand corner because I disabled test signing or something a while ago. Could this be anything to do with it?
