We are currently upgrading our wifi technology at work. As a result I have obtained an access point that was used in the network no longer needed. I would like to install this in my home in order to boost the signal and range.
The access point is a D-Link DWL-8610AP. I have no CD-ROM or manual however I have looked at a few videos online. The problem I have at the moment is that I cannot seem to get into the Access point user interface to make any changes.
I have connected the access point my laptop using an ethernet cable. There are 2 ports on the access point: a LAN port and a console port. I have tried both.
Next I have opened a browser and typed 192.168.0.50 into the address bar which I acquired from an online manual and video. However, this just returns a search list when I expected a window requesting the login details for the access point. I can't seem to get any further.
I have almost zero experience of networking so any help will be greatly appreciated.
AFAIK....you have to run an Ethernet cable from modem/router to access point using the LAN port. Then you should be able to access the access points web based page. As suggested I would manually reset the unit using the reset button on back of unit. It's the pin hole.....push and hold reset button until it reboots itself.
A quick look at the product page says you cannot use this AP as a stand alone AP. It's what is called a lightweight AP. This means the AP needs a central controller to function. You have to purchase one of DLink's wireless controllers or unified switches to make this AP work.
Or, as I almost recommended earlier, buy a residential version of whatever (AP? Repeater? Mesh?) you actually think that you need. These, beginning maybe half a dozen years ago, pretty much configure themselves with little effort and input from the purchaser.
Thanks for the advice so far. I think I need to be a little more clear about the setup I have.
I'm in the UK and have broadband provided by virgin superhub. Wifi from this is 100mbs in the same room as the hub.
I have run an ethernet cable from this hub to a different room in the house and connected a 'tp-link 5 port Gigabit Easy Smart Switch' which I have a tv connected to. I am now trying to add the D-Link access point on to this switch.
I've now done a factory reset on the access point and tried both connecting it to the switch and directly to my laptop using ip 192.168.0.50 as suggested online but just get a web page which says no network connection when I should be expecting the admin login window. I've plugged into the LAN port on the access point rather than the PoE LAN or console ports.
In terms of lights on the access point, I have a solid power light, a blinking LAN1 light and a blinking 2.4 GHz light.
Having looked at the online Quick Install Guide it doesn't give any information regarding accessing the admin page.
As mentioned in my opening post, I don't possess the CD that comes in the box but I'd have thought I could get around that in some way.
Try the Unified AP Manual from that link I gave in post # 2. Maybe the CLI Reference Guide is helpful.
Some routers show all the devices connected to it while others show only the ones using Dhcp. Look at whatever information your router gives for clues about whether and how the AP is connected.
Terry is spot on with his suggestion to look at the Unified AP Manual. I glanced at it and it has all the answers you're looking for. Per page 13, the AP if not configured will automatically look for a DHCP server to get an IP address. If it doesn't find a DHCP server, it uses this default IP address: 10.90.90.91.
Reading through the manual, I was incorrect with my statement about needing a wireless controller or unified switch to operate the AP. This AP can operate in stand alone mode or managed mode.
I'll look into this but may leave it for a while and come back to it as I'm fearful of messing up my entire wifi during this lockdown. That wouldn't go do well!!!
