I have a pc at the office running Win98SE. The user had always used netscape in the past, but now wants to use IE6. Previous to this decision, he had downloaded and installed Netscape7. Then he un-installed it. Netscape 5 remains on his PC. IE 6 works fine when launched, but when clicking on a link in email, it always opens his old netscape. He can't uninstall it, as he gets an error that the uninstall log file is missing.

How do we get IE6 to be the default browser, and additionally, how do we remove the old netscape w/o an uninstall log?

Hi
kimmer13

the easieast way to reset IE is to "Repair" it in the control panel /add-remove programs applet.
Act like you're going to uninstall IE, and you'll have the option to repair it.

Never heard of Netscape 5...maybe a version of 4.xx ?

Reinstalling the proper/matching version of Netscape, then uninstalling, may be the way to go there.

Or if you get the file associations fixed, he can keep both.

thanks, will try repairing IE. Netscape could be 4xx... so we'd need to find that version's disk or cd and use it to reinstall then uninstall? i think we'll just leave it if we can get IE to be the default!

Start IE. Go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs. There put a tick mark in the check box titled "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default".

Click on OK and restart IE. That will prompt you next time you start IE and ask if you want IE to make your default browser. Click on Yes/OK and it should be your default browser.

Another alternative is to click on an .htm file. Press Shift and Right Click. Now select Open With....

In the small window that appears, put a tick mark next to a check box titled "Always use this program to open these files". From the list, select IE and click on OK. Even this should register IE as your default browser. But the first option is better because there are more files then .htm that a browser needs to open be default.
