I just re installed 98SE on my Thinkpad 600 and have a few problems. In the device manager I have a question mark against the "Standard dual pci ide controller" and another against "other devices...unknown device". i also get the "vredir.vxd and dfs.vxd files missing as well as msnp32.dll missing since i tried to install the wifi pcmcia card. When I tried ti install the safecom pcmcia card with the driver disc, the laptop asked for the 98SE disc but could not find the files. Any help greatly appreciated.

point it to C:\Windows\Options\Cabs for the Win98 files. If that doesn't work, I have found that pointing the "installation source" to the same directory as the "destination" will work if the file is already in that directory. (Most of the time this will be C:\Windows, C:\Windows\System, or C:\Windows\Inf.)

When you are asked to place the CD in the drive, it should give you a "browse" option, where you can choose a different location for the installation files.

    Hi,

I too have recently had to do a re-install of W98SE on a friends thinkpad 600E. I have managed to get nearly everything working except I too get the yellow question marks in the system -> hardware manager window for standard dual PCI IDE controller and other devices->unknown device. So 2 problems:

    1) Removing the PCI IDE controller just means that when you restart it re-installs itself again ! The HD, floppy and CD all work fine. There are two other entries under hard disk controllers both labelled 'Standard Bus mastering IDE hard disk controller' and these have no question marks so appear OK. What do I need to load to make the other one happy also ??

    2) How can I look for a driver or try and debug if I don't know what the device is ?

I have loaded all the crystal drivers for audio but I am getting no sound. Looking at properties for the unknown device says it is causing a hardware conflict, so this might have something to do with it.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Terry

    tas,

You should start your own question.

Posting to an old one will be difficult to get the support you want.

Check IBM's website for the drivers
