I'm running Windows 98 on a Gateway Computer. My wife recently installed the latest version of Turbo Tax and my son accidentally visited a porn site. One of those two actions has done something to our computer. I cannot double click on the icons for Internet Explorer or MusicMatch and access them. The hourglass icon appears but nothing happens. If I right click on IE and click Open Home Page, the same thing happens (nothing). If I right click on IE and click Open, I can access the Internet. Then, if I try to click on links on same pages, the computer locks up. If I try to open a PDF file, the computer locks up. Even if I right click on MusicMatch, and click Open, it doesn't work at all. Also, I'm also running Neato MediaFace for label making, and if I click on the Install Text function, the computer locks up.

I get the feeling I've been hit with a virus, but nothing's coming up when I scan with Norton and I've also used AdAware.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

Let's see just what is currently starting up...

Create a new, permanent folder for HijackThis and save the file to that. Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

    Direct HijackThis download link: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

Also, when did these two events occur, and which was last? It's possible to restore registries for the last 4 days, but this would negate any install in that period.

HIJACKTHIS 1.99.1 has just been released. You can download it from here.

Do not create a folder for the unzipped HijackThis.exe file in the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder. Place it elsewhere.

[IMG] Have these instructions printed or in a convenient Notepad (or Wordpad) file so you can view them in Safe Mode. Have "show hidden (or all) files" checked in Folder Options > View in case you have to search for any hidden files to delete. Also ensure you do NOT have "hide file extensions..." enabled in Folder Options > View

If HijackThis has not been downloaded or copied to a permanent folder, move it there before beginning. Yours has not, so create a new, permanent folder for it before beginning. It can be in My Documents.

Download and unzip to a convenient location the CoolWebShredder, CWShredder.exe available here: http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

    Then:

1 >> Restart in Safe Mode. Instructions here if you need them:http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

2 >> In Safe Mode run the CoolWebShredder and have it "fix" detected problems. Then run HijackThis and check and "fix" the following entries:

Go to the Programs tab and select "reset web settings", including your home page if it has been altered. You can reset that later to what you desire.

Go to Start > Run, enter %temp% and then click Edit > Select All. Right click on the selected files and folders and delete them

    >> Reboot

Install and run a full drive scan using an updated Ad-Aware SE. Include the VX2 Plugin. Then reboot and post a new scanlog.

    Ad-Aware Home Page

    http://download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net/public/plvx2cleaner.exe
The VX2 plugin will be available in the "add-ons" window once installed and is run from there.

Your computer has the same problem that many others do - having too many unnecessary programs loading during startup and running in the background. This can cause all kinds of problems, but it mainly reduces overall performance.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - Startup(tab). Uncheck the following:

    CFD.EXE

    REALSCHED.EXE

    MM_TRAY.EXE

    QAGENT.EXE

    BAGENT.EXE

    QTTASK.EXE
(Also, do a "find/search" for the QTTASK.EXE file, then delete it. It's not needed and is known to cause error messages)

    SALM.EXE
    (This one is a "nasty" (n) )

    WEBREBATES0.EXE

    WEBREBATES1.EXE
(The above 2 are also "nasties" (n) )

    MSTASK.EXE
(Keep this one checked, only if you're using Scheduling Agent to run maintenance at certain times)

    AOLTRAY.EXE

    CTNOTIFY.EXE

    MRTMNGR.EXE

Once you're done, click Apply - OK, then reboot.

Run your computer for awhile and see how it runs with the startup list trimmed down. Some of them can be started manually by you when needed, and don't need to auto-start.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

You should delete the buildup of temp files on a regular basis because they can cause problems, along with allowing some "nasties" a place to hide.

Click Start - Find/Search - Files And Folders, select the hard drive to look in, then delete everything that appears under:

    *.TMP

    C:\TEMP\*.*

    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\*.*

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Do the above after first following R_R's instructions.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    To all concerned:

You've been very helpful. I can now access IE and Musicmatch as normal. I cleared out a lot of TMP files and the .EXE files as recommended. Definitely a help. However, after downloading HijackThis, I tried to open it in Safe mode, and got linked to my NeroMIX program instead. Therefore, I couldn't fix the entries recommended by RR. Tips?

Also, I've used different programs for editing and displaying photo files. Now I don't have a default setting anymore for this. I should know this, but don't: how do I restore a default setting for photos?

    Thanks again for your help.

When you downloaded HijackThis, you should have saved it in a permanent location. Best to create a separate folder for it. You can right click on the url and select "save target as" and specify the download location.

If you previously saved it to a temporary folder, that may be why you cannot find it. You can also run it in normal mode and fix the items suggested. Then reboot and try to delete the files I listed, if they are still present.

Post another HijackThis Scanlog after you have "fixed" the items I listed.

I'll assume the image associations you are concerned about are jpeg, gif and bmp.

To reassociate them with their defaults, select (highlight) one of the image files. Then SHIFT+Right click at the same time on the file. You should see a menu with "Open With" as an option. Select that, and then from the scroll menu select IExplore.exe for jpegs and gifs. Then select "Always Use..." and ok. For .bmps, the association is to mspaint.

Also you may still have problems with image previews. If this is the case, there is a registry patch for jpegs and gifs which will restore all default associations. It is available here:
